So tonight my horse had his doodah hanging out for ages whilst in the stable and kept lifting his back legs and kicking up, clearly irritated and uncomfortable. He then did a short burst of wee then stopped and repeated the process after a minute of two. He was obviously not happy so will phone the vet tomorrow but does anyone else have experience of this? What was the outcome? Also, apart from that he was completely fine in himself, seemed bright enough, eating up etc. Thanks!

I know a horse that will kick his penis ocassionaly when he wants a pee.

But I think you're right to get it checked out if you think this behaviour is out of the ordinary.

The one thing you can do is to collect a sample for the vet to take away and test - as this will help diagnose any problems.....

I've never seen him do it before. it was almost like cystitis symptoms like constantly needing a wee but only being able to do short squirts at a time whilst being v uncomfortable hence lifting the back legs up I guess? God poor old boy if it is that, I've had it and I know how bloody painful it is! Wanted to get a sample but unfortunately no suitable container but will go armed with one tomorrow night!

Wagtail, if you suspect an infection, please don't wait until tomorrow night to collect a sample. Take one tomorrow morning if possible, and have it available for the vets visit tomorrow.

My horse has this about a month ago but it wasn;t kicking out, just very very down in the dumps and his wee was really smelly and dark, however when the vets came and checked out his kidneys and back, but did he throw a wobbler, and di kick the vet which is very unlike him! Your wise to get the vet out, my lad has 10days antibiotics and some salt in his feeds and was back to normal.

My old horse had cystitis in January this year, I put hot pads over his loins kept him warm and he was treated with Penicilan(spell?) one jag a day for 7 days, after the first jag he was so much more comfortable, my vets tried to find out what was wrong wih him for about 4 days, treaing him for colic, he had the symptoms but only when he moved, sweats, flank watching, uncomfortable so on, we where actually thinking we may have to put him down as he hadn't eaten for about 3 days, when I saw him try to pee I went and looked up all the symptoms in my vet book and thats what I came up with, when head vet came out next day to do the deed I asked him to consider his symptoms, he agreed it sounded like cystitis and gave him a jag afte that there was no looking back, phew! Good luck hope its nothing more serious and if it is this its easily treated!
