I am suspicious that my mare has a virus. She has had a short, occasional cough when hacking and felt a bit more lethargic than usual. I then noticed what looked almost like grass glands up each side; but she is only on grass for an hour a day so I wouldn't have thought it was that..I have stopped riding her while waiting for her to return to normal but her glands are still up. It must have been 10 days or so now, so any idea anyone when this virus -if it is one- should be clearing up? She seems fine in herself, eating and acting normally -looking very well actually -and the other horses are fine. Can't see any point getting the vet as they can't treat viruses. There is no discharge. Thanks.

I would always get the vet if I thought my horse was unwell as whilst they can't actively treat a virus they can take bloods and monitor the severity of it. When Jesper had his first virus he had six weeks off followed by six weeks of gentle work, however he was quite poorly with this virus and was young. The second virus he had three weeks off and another three weeks of quiet work. Totally depends on the horse though.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I don't think its bacterial as no discharge. Events changed everything when I found Ellie with a punctured leg artery this morning; so suddenly the virus was the least of my worries-she is on a week's box rest now

Once Ellie was safely bandaged up I did ask the vet about the virus and she didn't seem worried, just said to ride her gently (which won't be for a while now) and see how she goes. Thanks again.

I noticed you are in Bucks there has been an outbreak of strangles in south east Buckinghamshire but if your vet has cleared her then that is fine.
