My parents have just lost their 9 yr old sprollie, and are devestated.

He went downhill very rapidly and within 24 hours had died at the vets. They didn't want the vet to do a post mortum, but I am still trying to work out what killed him.

Symptoms were:
Loss of appitite
Passing maroon coloured liquid/blood
Drinking loads
Reluctant to move, and wobbly when he did.
Eating grass and being sick
Had a raised temperature (according to vet)
Gums looked okay, nose was wet, eyes bright.

Vet took him in and put him on a drip, 2 hours later, my parents received That phonecall!

Apparently they didn't ask the vet for his opinion (I'm popping in to ask tomorrow - as my dogs are round at my parents quite alot, concerned that they might pick something up).

My dad is on warfarin for his heart, and I wondered if Mungo could have picked up a dropped tablet??

Any ideas would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry to hear about Mungo - sleep well.:(:(:(

It is unlikely that one tablet of warfarin would do that to him - its action is to thin the blood and slow clotting so unless he had an internal bleed that no one knew about I doubt one tablet would have had that effect as it wouldn't cause bleeding.

warfarin is also used in rat poison. Is there any possibility that he could have gotten hold of any rat poison? Warfarin is toxic to dogs but unless he ate quite a few warfarin tablets I doubt very much a dog of that size would have died from eating just one tablet.

I lost two pugs in October due to warfarin poisoning from rat bait my neighbours had put down. It is very, very dangerous stuff.

Sorry to hear about your parents dog... :(

Sounds nasty, what a shame. Was he passing bloody mucous in his stools did you mean? Was it runny? Sorry to be gross, I just wonder if he had a gastro-intestinal incident, perhaps a bleed, cancer, poison ingestion etc. There are a lot of things that could cause this kind of thing, rat poison is certainly one of them but not the only thing by any stretch. Was he vaccinated up to date? Older dogs are less likely to have parvovirus but it's still possible. Poor boy, at least he was in a good place when he left :(

im sorry to hear that your parents has a lost their dog..it does sound like some sort of poison, they must be devastated

i had to take my dog to the vet yesterday as she also went off her food ,lerthargic, sickness diahorra(yellow, runny) lost a lot of weight..on the mon i saw her with a dead mouse in her mouth

took her to the vet and she 'could' of eaten mouse poison..vet gave vit k and ABs and a solution to drink(her temperture, gums, stomach all felt normal),gotta take her back tomorrow, gladly to say that shes on the mend and have just introduce some rice

poison 'can' react quickly to some dogs or it can course illness some days after
