Can anyone advise me on the best way to mark tack and rugs to try and discourage theft. I am quite close to the areas that seem to be a target at the moment and have been meaning to get this done for some time. Have tried using permanent marker on rugs but it doesnt show up on the dark colours. I never leave anything at the yard but I do know that rugs are sometimes taken off the horses backs!! Does anyone have any tried and tested ideas please for just making it that little bit more difficult for stuff to be stolen and sold on.

One of the girls at our farm painted her post code onto her rugs. As for tack - I think I saw somewhere about stamping the post code into the leather.

You can buy a post code stamp kit at Halfords.

Alternatively your local rural community police officer will be happy to do it for you.

The other thing to use is 'Smart Water' which when applied leaves coded particles on your tack which will permanently remain on it and also transmit to anyone that handles it.

A lot of stolen tack is recovered but the trouble is identifying the owner if it is not marked. This is why it is so important to mark it.

Painted all my rugs in large yellow letters my postcode only had one stolen that I had bought second-hand and that was taken off a mare that doesn't tolerate strangers, so I guess I know where it went back too. All my tack is kept at home.
