Q my new horse (3 months in) was kicked in the field resulting in a fracture with bone fragments. He underwent an op this morning to remove the fragments and also deal with the infection this had caused.
He went under at 10, he was out of the op at 12.30 at the latest (although the vet had said it should just take an hour). Various phone calls later I have been told Q still hasn't gotten up (2.30pm). he's awake but won't stand up. They don't think it's his leg.
They are trying to sling him up now and will ring back in half an hour.
Why would this be? Does any have a similar experience (hopefully with a positive outcome)? Vet's not forthcoming as still working on Q and I'm going totally out of my mind.

Some horses really take their time to get up, in some ways this is much better than the ones that come round and freak. The most difficult bit is for you waiting on the end of the phone waiting for up dates. Try not to panic to much - he's obviously laid back.

Good luck

Mine had an op last wednesday (they thought it was bone chips from a kick but just infection). I was on the forum worrying too!!!

He went in at 9am, and vet didnt ring til 4.30. They said he had lay down for nearly 3 hours looking like he was going to get up. He was very weak afterwards, but a week on and hes fine. Try not to worry because he will be fine.

A mare of ours had an emergency GA to remove her stuck foal and didnt get up for hours, that was because she was weak and had lost a lot of fluid.

I'm sure theyre doing everything they can, fingers crossed he heaves himself up soon!

Well good news he is eventually up. He waited until they had the sling ready and got up!

Apparently he's done himself a fair bit of damage though from all the thrashing about. he's ripped out his drains and some stitching. They're leaving him tonight as he's had rough day and will hopefully be able to refit the drains under heavy sedation.
