I am doing a Veteran Handler class next Sunday!!! lol

How can I be classed as a veteran? I may be over 50 (just) but I feel like I did when I was 18. There is a lovely show next Sunday at Sibton, a really old show in some beautiful grounds and there is a Veteran Handler class.

My friend who shares my land (and who is 26) thinks this is hilarious and is entering me with her mare (who is also a veteran!!!).

Ugh. Well I suppose it will be good to keep my hand in until my baby is on the circuit next spring.

Surely veterans should be over 70s?!

I'm 60 and I'm not ready to be a veteran yet. P'raps I should ask Llwyncwn if look that old. You're as young as you feel just younger some days than others that's all.

I have sneakily looked at your post even though I am not over 50 (a mere spring chicken at 49

) .
Sibton Show is great - I was going to go and bring "teeth-on-hooves" aka Charlie, the mini Falabella x, but I am helping at an endurance ride instead.
Have fun and show the youngsters how it's done.

ha ha ha I have never heard of a veteran handler class before. I am sure you will do brilliantly.

So is your 26 year old friend still your friend? LOL

Am 36 and sorry for reading your post, I was intrigued.

I sneaked a look, even though I don't qualify for another 18 months

Our RC has an over 45's equitation class. I think I haven';t changed at all over the years and veteran should be over 75! I also think that veteran horse should be over 25, having had 4 who got beyond that in good shape and in full vigour for a couple of years longer

so do they provide zimmerframes as you walk in the ring?!

No, but I thought I would take one just for a laugh. Another friend (52) who is also doing it says she will take a walking stick. Haha. Actually I expect I will look useless if my charge "Ruby" is as fired up as she can be!!

I snuck a look too...although I don't qualify either - by more than a decade

I'd just like to say I think it's great that The Aged i.e. You, Pinkweasel, are helped to integrate into society in this way.
If there's going to be any trotting, remember to take your incontinence pads....

Haha, Shilasdair, how very droll of you. Actually, I'm really glad that the horse I will be showing farts dreadfully. That way it wont be too embarrassing. I hope I dont have to trot too far as I will probably need to stop for my inhaler.

Pity they dont have any classes for "Other speces" handlers otherwise you would have something to do!!!!

I agree - it's very anti-daemon, isn't it? Although I can have an effect, I find, just by sitting in the audience. Well, I assume that's why all my friend's horses play up....

Good Grief how can people be so rude Zimmer Frames and incontinence pants indeed. It reminds me of the time (yes I am over 50 and my memory works) I mentioned feeling a little out of control cross country and a lovely girl at the yard said 'Gosh your brave' I thought she was referring to going cross country in a hackamore as the downhill part of the course was a bit more exciting than intended but she then followed it up with 'I hope I can still jump when I'm your age!'

Slightly aside...

I was looking at entries for an Event earlier, where one of the sections is called -

Vet Pre-Novice.

Am I right in thinking this is a Veteran Pre-Novice class? If so, what age do the riders (or horses!) have to be?

...Or is it a section for Veterinarian competitors only?

I won the veteran rider class trophy (over 40s) at our local show three years running. In fact the secretary forgot to alter the qualifying year for a few years so everyone just got older and older and no "youngsters" could enter!

I like to think of it as the "experienced rider" class. However, if the judge ever dared to ask the entrants about themselves they usually got a long list of ailments...I was proud to not moan about my infirmities...hope you have fun ...can we have pics of the "experienced handlers" please?

Whatever happened to Jennie Loriston Clark'es GODS ( getting older dressage society? ) Maybe we should start something like that . Any suggestions for names?

I was a vet before I started eventing. Now waiting for them to introduce a 'really old codgers' section.
