I have a rising 4yr old mini Yorkie. He is great in all respects apart from he wees intermitently on the utility room tiles instead of going out his dog flap! He poops outside ok so I don't understand why he does it intermitently on the tiles? It's worse if it rains as he hates getting his feet wet!

I have tried:

1. Chastising him by making him sniff his wee (NOT rubbing his face in it like some people advise!), telling him off and making him go out his dog flap and rewarding him when he does wee outside.

2. Putting his eating and bedding stuff in the utility room (previously in family room) hoping he won't wee in his bedroom but he still does!

3. Scrubbing the tiles with Jeyes fluid and Detol to eradicate all aromas.

4. Sending him out his flap for wees when I am at home.

I work 9am-3pm every day and he is walked twice a day. When I am not at home or in bed, I cannot control where he wees so apart from tie him to my apron strings can anyone help before I resort to a litter tray or nappies (she jokes!!!!!).

Is he neutered? Sniffing the pee and telling him off does not work, even if you do catch him in the act, even less so when you don't - what sense does it make? If you think like him, a dog? :)
He's a dog and he see it as a logical place to go to the toilet, like we see the bathroom/toilet as a logical place.

I don't actually think litter trays/pee pads are a bad idea in this instance. Can you make the area he has access to, smaller in some way? This will also help 'force' him outside.
Have you ruled out a veterinary reason like a UTI or something?

I would also get the vet to check him out. Betty had a lot of trouble with toilet training and would still have 'accidents' exactly when it was wet and cold outside, so we assumed it was behavioural, but 14 years on she is on medication that has completely stopped the problem.

If it is not physical can you place a crate directly off his dog flap, so his choice is either a nice bed inside, or go outside for toilet?

Thank you for your replies. He is neutered and is going to see the vet tomorrow to rule out UTI.

If it's just habit, I can make the area smaller during the night and when I am at work so there's only enough room for his bed in a crate and water with direct access to the dog flap.

Will keep you posted on progress!

A successful update on gorgeous mini Yorkie who had intermittment pee problem!

UTI ruled out. Went to Costco on a routine shopping trip and bought for £11 a very large heavy duty mat with rubber backing that almost covered the whole of our utility room floor.

Voila....2.5 weeks later no pee on the tiles anymore :-) The mat has obviously disguised the scent which must eat its way into the grout tiles despite me analying cleaning them. I am one happy dog owner :-) Yay :-)
