I have been so lucky that in the 3 yrs I have owned my beloved ginger beast he has been very low maintenance re vet visits.
I had a call today from YO (also a good friend) to say that she'd just got him in and he had a very bloody nose and what looked like a piece of wood stuck in it. I was only 10mins away so dashed over there. She'd cleaned it up a bit and when I looked realised it wasn't wood but cartilage.....absolutely horrified.
Called the vet who said he'd be straight out but I said that I would take him to them as they have superb facilities and the chances are they would've wanted him in anyway.
Poor B loaded into the lorry fine and travelled well. When we got there vet started the mamouth task of cleaning up and fixing. What he found under the blood was the piece of cartilage that supports the underside of the nostril lying on top of the skin (looked like a tusk coming out of his nostril). Very nasty.
B was so brave tho, he had loads of dope and vet managed to get it uber clean and got it back where it came from. Skin went back together like a jigsaw which made us think that he had got something stuck up his nose, panicked and pulled away and tore his nose open
(we think he's been investigating the hedge as there is nothing else for him to have done it on
)
So the poor chap is in Horspital for 3 days on i/v antibiotics, if it gets infected he'll have to have the cartilage removed and an op done to ensure his nostril will stay open when doing fast work (he's an eventer), hope fully thats worst case scenario that won't happen. They should know if it is infected by day 5, which isn't great as I'm abroad with work for a week from Sun so will be worries sick.
I don't feel desperate now I know its clean and stitched and he's in the right place - cheeky boy stuck his head in the feed bowl as soon as he got in the stable and was most put out to find it empty!
The vets took loads of pics as this is a really unusual thing to happen so I'll post them when I get a copy - they are quite gross tho!
Anyway, cookies if you got this far! Pls send healing vibes to my very specail pride and joy, I'm going to see him tomorrow and fear his face will look like a balloon
