Potassium Bromide longer term, what are the side effects? And can it be detrimental long term? I can’t seem to find much about it online, probably because it’s a banned substance.

It's only banned whilst competing.

It's still used as a calmer for horses.

My horse was given this when he was at a rehab yard after box rest. I had tried Sedalin at home, but he was being a deranged lunatic and even gave the YO a fright, thinking he was going to be Mr Laid Back, he wasn't.

She had to get it off the vet, but it is cheap and apparently can be used when breaking in TB colts. I rode him at the yard when he was due to come home, while he was still getting a small dose. "This," I thought, "is something that could well be open to all sorts of dodgy uses." Like a dealer with a naughty horse as it is supposed to leave the system within 24 hours. Wasn't there a case of a show horse that tested positive?

Also, as the YO found out as the vet had forgotten to remind her, it can cause colic as I suppose it slows everything down and bless her, she went out at 10.00 to find he hadn't eaten his feed and spent the next hour leading him in hand trying to get him to eat some grass to get his system working. When he did start to eat he was fine and was on it for about a month I guess. I never needed to use it again once he came back and was Mr. Laid Back again.
