Hello - sorry for the long post - trying to get in all the information!

Just been for a second viewing of a horse I really like and am hoping to put a deposit down on, pending passing 5 stage vetting - during which which I would mention to the vet all I am about to say below!

First - I noticed the horse pulled a face when the saddle went on and when the girth was initially done up (not so much when it was tightened, just when going round his belly the first time). Owner/breeder said he'd always been funny with the saddle/girth from when first backed. No problem when mounting that I saw/felt.

Second - When we went for a hack he changed his walking gate whenever we went even slightly downhill. You could stop him doing it by asking for a touch of shoulder in and then straightening, but after half a dozen steps he would go back to what was almost a 2 beat walk again. Owner said he'd started doing it a couple of months back and she'd found it amusing at first (it does feel like his is waddling under you) and failed to correct it before she realised he'd picked up the habit and he was doing it whenever he went down hill.

Otherwise lovely to ride, very smooth paces and transitions. He's just turned 7, spent 3 years hacking with a novice and the last 8 months learning flat work and competing BD dressage.

Thinking about it now (when away from the soporific effect of the beautiful horse ), I am getting worried. I know vetting cost is not vast in the grand scheme of things, but it isn't pennies by any means.

So really I was just wondered whether anyone had any experience of horses doing this? I.e. is this a well know warning signal for kissing spine or any other horrors and should I steer well clear and not even think of spending money getting him vetted?

Thank you for persevering!

At best he is unbalanced and on his forehand. I have had the same issue with younger horses and after schooling and strengthening it disappears.

At worst the horse you tried is lame.

The walking down hill would concern me, it will not be a habit as such but an avoidance tactic, it may be something and nothing that physio would fix but my concern would be that the seller, who competes BD? has not looked into it before putting the horse on the market, or have they?

Any horse I have had that has walked downhill awkwardly has had an issue, usually easily treated, it may well pass a vetting as it is but I would ask for the trotting on a circle to be done early on rather than the end as something may show up at that stage.

The face pulling might just be a bit of grumpiness, I've known horses do this that were otherwise fine.

The shuffling gait downhill would worry me more, I would worry it was a sign of discomfort/pain. I'd definitely mention it to your vet.

Thank you for your replies.

This is from his ad. -

From what I saw and felt, and comparing the videos I took with this, I reckon he was moving pretty much like this today. I know he is a bit unbalanced in places and doesn't maintain the trot well when asked to extend, but otherwise I think he looks okay?! He felt sound. I'm now going crosseyed looking for signs that he isn't right!

May be his saddle doesn't fit very well, that could explain the face pulling and the awkward gait down hill??

In the video he does look a little weak behind the saddle, and seems to hollow through that area when he becomes unbalanced and leave his back legs behind a little. That could easily be the cause of the downhill shuffling, but the weakness could be just because more strengthening work is required or because there is an underlying issue - a good vet should be able to advise. You can ask a vet to look at him walking downhill if you are concerned. Nothing is definitive enough for you not to go ahead with the vetting if you liked the horse though - go for it :)

Agree it's a tricky one but if you like him I would go for a vetting and get the vet to focus on back/lameness. Do you have to put a deposit down? Agree with be positives advice.

But yes those could be a symptom of kissing spine (or other things ofc). Particularly the saddle/girth issues.

Grumpy saddling wouldn't make me assume the worst. KS sign yes, but could also be a sign of a heavy handed owner who ratchets him up too quickly.

I know the two beat walk that you speak of. My h/w cob mare does this down a steep incline, I call it her Shakira walk as it REALLY jiggles me around at a faster walk. It is a result of her being on the forehand if I allow her to be, walking loose she does Shakira downhill, asked to carry herself she finds it harder work, but the Shakira disappears. We are talking about coming down a hill with about a 50% incline.
