Potential new pony - advice please

Long story short, have just sold my 7yo daughters little welsh gelding as he was just a little too much for her off the lead, nothing major but enough to dent her confidence.

I am now scouring the ads trying to find a 'Mothers Dream':rolleyes: FR to get her going. With the added drawback of living in SW Scotland and not being prepared to travels hundreds of miles!

Anyhow, found what sounds a super little pony, and not too far away. With the owner insisting I have it on trial to make sure shes right for my daughter, perfect.

However, before we've even got as far as the viewing, pony has gone lame. Turns out she has an abcess and is being treated for this and now on antibiotics. So basically, would this put you off (obviously I mean when shes sound again). Having been lucky enough never to have a horse with an abcess, I don't know much about any long term effects, or is it just a case of once it's better, then thats the end of it. Or should I just forget about it?

No I wouldn't let it put me off. Genuine first ponies are like rocking horse sh** and so few people will allow a pony to go on trial these days you'd be crazy to pass up this opportunity you may wait a long time for another :)
 
No , it wouldn't put me off at all , it's just one of those things that can happen at anytime , my mare came in from the field on three legs once , she had a foot abcess which my farrier dealt with ( he happened to be passing when i called him ) he opened up her sole to let the puss out and i poulticed for a week or so , i did get the vet for an anti b jab but she was good as new in no time , i did soak her foot each night which involve sticking her foot in a bucket and bandaging a poultice each night so it's a heads up as to how the pony copes with having to have medical attention..
 
So long as the abcess is not laminitis related (and the vet will be able to tell you that), I would snap the vendor's hand off. There aren't many people willing to let a pony go on trial.
