I'm posting in here because potential purchase would be aimed at competing and training!
Background - we have 2 horses, one retired and one going that way - and are considering a 3rd as we would like to get back into riding a bit more seriously.
Budget is pretty flexible, but being new to this type of market, what would you expect to pay for something like this?

Gelding
16.2+
6 - 8 yo
Easy to box, shoe, clip
Been out and seen the world a bit, nothing over the top, but some competition experience
Safe and sane (within reason given still young)
Potential to affiliate eventing (or has done so already)

Basically a gentleman with a bit of get up and go, what everyone wants I suppose! safe, sane & sound! If anyone knows of any superstars for sale in Ireland, I'm all ears...

This is going to depend a little bit on where you are located, how far you will travel, how quick you will move to view and what your expectations are (ie how flexible you will be on different things).

If Lady Luck is on your side and you aren’t particularly fussy then with some patience you should find it for 6k. The more boxes you want to tick the more you might need. 10k is a reasonable ballpark, but even then don’t expect a really solid affiliated record.

In reality you will probably see a lot advertised in the 12-15k area. The good ones will sell for that. The others are probably 8k horses with people either trying their luck or with rose tinted specs.

You could be lucky and get a riding club horse with potential for a bit less, or take a vice or a sarcoid or something for a few quid off, but I'd agree with the above, if you want them vice free, pass a 5 stage, quiet and sensible with the potential for novice and a bit of a record of being out and about, then you're looking for the same thing as a lot of other people and £10-£15k is likely.
Be prepared to move fast and at this time of year some people are keen to shift them on. Could try a pro to see if they have anything which won't go up the grades? They don't like feeding them over winter once they've decided that they won't go on.
Good luck :-)

Thanks all so much for your insight - really appreciate it :)

We've seen a lovely boy who sounds to fit the bill, going to have a chat with the seller tomorrow and see about potentially arranging a viewing. Money-wise he is in the region suggested, I thought it seemed about right, just needed a sanity check from more experienced buyers/sellers.

We're in Ireland, and happy to travel! I know bargains are still available to an extent, we'd rather spend a bit more to get something ready to go rather than buying a problem! The exchange rate isn't great at the minute anyway. We've been there & done that with quirky, and, as much as we love our quirky mare, we'd rather something a little more straightforward this time.
