(Potential) rig affecting gelding

New one seems to possibly be a rig (displaying all the characteristics). He was out in our established mixed herd before we realised, and it seems to have really upset the gelding, who is now mounting the mares. Rig has now been put in his own paddock behind electric fence.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this, and how they dealt with it?

I had my last pony tested as though he was a rig. Tests came back all ok but he’d been gelded very late and had sired.

I found Rig Calm really helpful.

I bought a pony years ago, did what I thought was due diligence including speaking to the old owner who specifically stated he was good with mares and geldings, the vendor knew he was going to be a companion to a mare…

He started mounting her and displaying stallion behaviour, he couldn’t be with her nor apart from her.

Blood test revealed he was a gelding so a total false rig.

I had him on Regumate after that which helped a little but not enough for him to be out with my mare.

I sold him (with full disclosure and copies of the vet report).

It took my mare a good year to stop having wild seasons.

(I also found out he had a history of this behaviour, had injured a mare before and was always quite sharp in public because of his belief he was entire, ffs)

Interesting... My 20 yo TB gelding has lived in various mixed herds since he was 6. He's always been a bit of a ladies' man but is completely obsessed with my new mare to the point that it's a nuisance. I suspect that he's a false rig, and if so, it doesn't sound as if there is much to be done about it? I might get him tested anyway just in case he's a 'true' rig.

How annoying. My first port of call if the behaviour persists and isn't just "new boy" throwing his weight around (and he isn't actually a rig) is agnus castus, otherwise known as "monk's pepper" for good reason 😉

FWIW, mine had 2 x jabs of depo provera today (the human contraceptive jab) with another two in a month's time & it will then be 6 monthly. Too early to tell if it's working. PM me if you're interested in whether it works :)
