Bit of a weird one but.....
If someone (that knows what they are talking about) said your horse has great potential at a discipline (whether it be SJ, XC or DR) but you were not that interested in taking it any further would you sell your horse and buy an allrounder? Give this discipline a go and see what happens?
Or ignore it, it's your horse?

do what you want to do with your own horse.
I try at everything with Murph and we both seem to be happy

It depends on what you want for your horse, you could get someone else to ride it for you or you could keep doing what you love doing with your horse. People get carried away with 'potential'. At the end of the day which horse is happier? The one that's been out in the field with all his pals all day or the one that's been out jumping? They don't stand talking in the field trying to outdo each other with their stories!

Hi it really depends, if you have fun doing what your doing then keep him, if YOU think he is wasted get a rider or sell him.

I have one that I bred (5yo) he is very talented jumping so I have a rider for him. She comes and schools him once a week at my place and jumps him at shows, I hack him, lunge him etc. I would love to go out and jump him but he is far to good for me, he lives to jump so would be wasted if he didn't do it. He hates having days off he wants to work, his face lights up when you put a fence up in the school!
He has always been for sale but the right person hasn't come along yet!

I have potential for a lot of things....

very little will actually come of it

A horse does not sit around wishing he could be off doing better things and worrying that he never had the chance to fulfill his potential.

Every horse is born with it - none of them care if they fullfil it. Most of them don't. As long as you & he are happy it matters not. Just enjoy what you do.

As long as you are both happy what you are doing then why even think about selling it because someone suggested he would have potential?!

Hemir and I are going to try a bit of everything now that we can get out and about

and then we will probably just stick to SJ as he's never going to be an eventer LOL!

not that we wouldn't go clear XC...it's just we've got no hope for dressage

Echo previous poster - if you and he are happy then thats fine - he doesn't know what potential he has and frankly doesn't care - perhaps you yourself could unleash what potential he has because he may not get on with another rider - chemistry!!

If your happy and the horse is happy then there's absolutely no reason why you should sell him.

my 8yo loan horse could be a very good allrounder with tons and tons of hard work - he had a lot of time out before he came to me.
however i'm giving him back to his owner as he is currently bored and i dont have the time or energy to give him as much exercise as he needs. i feel he deserves a fearless rider who can cope with his fizziness and bring out his full potential. thats why i'm looking to buy a nice schoolmaster who is happy with my relaxed pace of life!! i hope i'm doing the right thing...

no!!!! my welsh cob could go on and do much greater things than i want to do with him, i have been told he should be doing pictons PUK etc, but i'm not that interested! no way would i sell him though unless i was absolutly destitute - although that won't be long the way fuel is going!!
the horse doesn't give a toss if it's not being competed at a certain level so why should you?? tell them politely to bog off!!

I was told one of mine would have 'won everything' showing - by two separate 'top' judges (unsought opinions, incidentally).
I hate showing, know nothing about it, have no intention of changing this either

I still have the horse...she appears not to be too bitter or resentful about her lack of fame
