potentially buying this horse - thoughts on price

Hi All

Hope Im allowed to do this - I am looking at a LWVB, owner and I have decided we should agree a price upfront based on what hes worth at this moment in time, So this is a brief discription of him


15.2 Irish TBx 5 years old. Happily jumps over coloured poles and little XC fences, schools relatively nicely, but needs quite a bit of work on his canter He's a forward going, responsive ride but not a nutter and seems quite happy in company or on his own. He's sweet to do, has perfect manners and as far as I'm aware has no stable vices. Has done a few little shows, mainly unaffliated dressage, has seen plenty of very heavy traffic, has hacked across forests and farms in company and alone with no problems and has been up to the gallops. Has a very small splint but other than that is clean and tidy,(hasnt been vetted yet, but relatively confident its not causing him any problems) well put together and very good looking little horse. He would come with rugs headcollars, brushes etc but tack would be separate.


Ive had a look at horsemart and other websites, and searched for horses of a similar description to get an idea, they seem to vary between 1k -6k!!!!

Thoughts on what this horse is worth?
 
I think it depends on this horses overall quality and movement.

I have just purchased a horse that pretty much fits your exact description apart from being TrakxIrishxTBxPony mix.

I paid top whack for him, possibly a little too much (!), but he is a really super young horse, I had the money to spend and I was happy to pay it. He was close to the top of your range.

That said, there are many on the market in the 2-3K bracket that are decent enough types. Given you are also getting a trial period (very nice bonus!) I would probably offer 3K
 
I agree with Fleabite and would say max £3500. He hasn't though done anything (ie affiliated events or any comps as such - well you haven't said what he did etc anyway) and he is young so obviously still needs some work, plus with a small splint he essentially does have a 'blemish'. However, if he is uncomplicated, good to hack on his own or in company etc then that is worth a fair bit to people so hence why I said £3500 max but I would base that on including the tack.
 
unless he has really flashy paces I would say £3000 max

I got a lovely WB for only £2400 he does all what you say, is just a little more excitable (but not much) so wouldn't be suitable for novice
 
A horse is worth as much as you are prepared to pay for it!. There is never any harm in making an offer. Some people are realistic about how much they can expect to sell a horse for others are not.

If you really want the horse but are not prepared to pay the asking price make your offer and if it is refused walk away. If the horse doesn't sell the owners may well come back to you but there are plenty of good ones out there at sensible prices. Good luck though.
 
depends too much on quality of the horse to comment on his value without a picture/ more info.

as long as you can afford the price required and don't feel you are being ripped off that is all that matters.

(also, the majority of people on this forum seem to answer what they would like to pay rather than what they would have to pay- there is a big difference! :))
 
hes certainly not a novice ride, and think he would need an awful lot of work to become so, I found him a little sharp, but he was fresh and settled quite nicley once he had got his excitement out of his system!! :) I wouldnt call his paces flashy, but they arent at all bad!! but hes a fun little chap, seems quite straightforward and genuine - I really enjoyed riding him, and think that whilst he needs work hes the sort that would learn quickly and is eager to please.

i'm looking to bring him on as a RC allrounder for myself, with the intention of a forever home, Im not planning on buying him to sell for a profit - so TT is right - ultimately it comes down to what hes worth to me, just wanted to get the opinion of all you knowledgable lovelys :) :)

I believe the owner is looking for 2-3K dependent on tack etc, so your all about right :)
 
From what you've said he sounds like a nice trainable horse with good conformation and the potential to do well at riding club and possibly higher. I personally would think at least £3500, and probably more towards £4000.
 
I don't see how you can really put a value on without seeing a picture.. in this instance he is worth what you are prepared to pay and the owner is happy to accept..!

I'd want much more than potential for that price! I'd expect to pay that for a 15.2 TB that has already done well at RC. For a youngster that needs work I would say £2000, at this time of year especially. However if you like him, and there are lots of rugs etc thrown in (TBs will most likely need them, so better if you don't have to buy them) then I think their idea of price is ok...
