Clover hasbecome increasingly unhappy walking down steep slopes over the last 3-4 months. The case history is 9 year old ISH doing over the summer some limited eventing and a lot of hacking. About 3 months ago we changed farrier to a chap who left her toe very long and seemed to do a very poor job. I saw no change in her performance at events however I have become aware she is increasingly unhappy walking down steep hills. We have changed farrier again to a chap that I think is very good, however Clover has only been done once since we changed ( the other chap we were going about 3-4 weeks between shoeing and the shoe were falling off at that point). Could I be loking at a case of sub-soler brusing? Will she just come right with getting proper foot care now or do I need to think more xterme investigation? What do you think?

Have you had her back checked and also her saddle.

My new horse was very unconfortable going down hill when I first had him due to a sore back. Physio and a correctly fitted saddle have now solved the problem.

Have you ruled Spavin out? My horse is a bit slow and pottery downhill, and she has mild spavin.

Having said that......she's only pottery when she feels like it! If she sees a horse at the bottom of the slope, she soon forgets to "potter" and strides out downhill! She's faking it, I suspect, for sympathy!

I would defo say let a good physio look at him, mine is absolutely fab and got everything spot on and can pick up whether u need the saddle man, vet or if the farrier is at fault.

I've had two do that at the same age, both ISH. Both times it was the feet, the heels had contracted together. Long toes, underrun heels and contraction usually happen together.

Your new farrier sounds like a good bloke, ask him to tell you what he sees and how he would remedy it.

Ha ha - my old horse was exactly the same. If it was just him he'd teeter down the hill at 0mph. If there was someone else at the bottom or he was with others he'd be cantering sideways down it. Not stupid are they?!!
