Is there any connection, anyone know? I have searched the laminitis site and there is nothing there. My old (36) lady who has been on pergolide for 6 years almost has suddenly last weekend developed this huge fluid swelling along her ribs behind her elbow, on just the near side. This morning it has extended into her foreleg, on the inside and around her knee. Vet came on Monday and couldn't suggest anything other than bute, which she has had injected and followed up for 3 days, but given the seasonal rise, could this be connected? I can increase her dose no problem but other than that the vet is suggesting it is the end of the road for her. She looks comfortable and not in any pain, but she isn't eating a lot.

Hi, didn't want to read and run, sorry your mare is not well, difficult with an oldie. Glad she is comfortable and not in pain. I cant give any advice re ppid Im afraid. Sending positive vibes your way.

I had owned my mare for 19 years when she got a large odema on her stomach end of last year..vet wasnt bothered and she had it for about 2 months..not saying its the same but she literally just dropped dead with a heart attack and the vet on call said it is where the heart is not working and pumping fluids thro the body... do get ur vet to check her heart.
Thank you. It's the kind of thing most horses shrug off in a few days, seems so ridiculous to even think of PTS for a fluid build up

Dandelions are meant to be a natural diuretic, if she likes them and you have some handy I imagine they certainly wouldn't hurt and may help.

I lost my old boy at 28 last year. He taught me so much, not least is that sometimes the end of the road is for the most innocuous of reasons, in his case a suspected hoof abscess. I hope your old girl pulls through the JillA, if not then I send you strength to deal with the time ahead. From experience I know looking after oldies is a real drain emotionally, comfort yourself she is not suffering.

Thank you - TBH if her heart does give way and she drops dead that would be a good outcome for her and for me. My old brood mare did that - when I found her in the field her eyes were still wide open, it was that quick. With this oldie, it just seems she has been so tough and coped with everything that life has thrown at her (I took her in when her owner died 7 years ago), PPID, IR, age, loss of teeth it seems such an anti-climax to even think of PTS for a fluid build up. We kind of got the feeling she would be around forever, she is that tough and that huge a personality (well bred and very opinionated arab :) )
I'll see if I can find her some dandelions, most have been scoffed by the others long since but I might go on a hedgerow safari.
