Hi, a friend has a smashing 5 year old mare who has been diagnosed with PPSM. She is awaiting results of a muscle biopsy to determine how bad this potentially is but in all likelihood it appears the mare may be unable to do anything but very light hacking. Has anyones horse been diagnosed with this and if so how did you treat this condition? Has the horse gone on to do any work, and if so what does this comprise of. What is the horse eating, and what level of work does it do? Thanks for any help you can give me.

It's worth doing a search on this on hho as there are a few users who have gone through similar problems with their horses - Changing the horse on to a high oil diet proved extremely effective - high oil does mean pints of oil though - so you introduce it into the diet slowly and build up the intake - You will need to feed a Vitamin E and Selenium supplement alongside the oil to combat free radicals.

You will find lots of information on this site http://www.ruralheritage.com/vet_clinic/epsm.htm
Beth Valentine is very experienced with EPSM/PPSM and replies to all emails - so it's worth dropping her a line.
Good luck - it's not the end of the road
