Practising after lessons?

After changing schools recently, I've been having lessons with some really fabulous instructors, and finally feel I'm starting to get somewhere with my riding.

However, when the lessons end I always feel as if I could do with another hour or so on a horse - on my own - just to go over and practise what the instructor has taught me in the lesson.

As far as I know the school won't allow this. They seem to like all their riders being supervised by an instructor. To be fair on them, this is probably for a very good reason - safety!

Just wondering how all you other new riders feel, and if anyone has any suggestions.

I'm not so much of a new rider but I am only taking lessons as the moment and I totally agree with you. It would be lovely to have some simple rider-schooling time, and even 20 mins to warm up and get used to a horse before a lesosn too!

Sadly I don't know of any schools that would do it, but a good instructor should build on the previous lesson so you have a chance to put it into practise slightly.

There are some riding schools that offer it. The best I knew for it was one where after your lesdon you could book s half hour 'hack' and ride down the track to a nearby field and work on whatever you wanted or if there was a spare school they would often just let you use that instead. Most dont go that far, but many of the obes I used to go to at least usdd to give 10 mind or so to warm up independently at the beginning of the lesson.

I am not new to riding, but i know how you feel. I'm a nervous rider, and didn't have a lesson since i was about 11 (own horses after that) and i had a lesson last year and another this year. They fixed my posistion and i found out i need to work on my forwardness, which is something i was too afraid to do with an audience. It felt like so much pressure. I would have loved an hour alone to do it in my own time. So i have booked the local riding schools horse and arena, and that is exactly what i'm going to do! Its not the school i would get a lesson at, and the horse is a plod, but it will let me build my confidence on my own time. I was going somewhere until my horse went lame so im back to horseelss.
