My subject this! I have four children, (6,4,2 and 4 months) so have certainly put a few assorted chairs through the ringer. The first one I got for no.1 was the mothercare urban detour three wheeler, it's brilliant, it went round umpteen country shows, Burghley, Blenheim it was great, especially through mud unlike little wheeled strollers. I also have the double version which again is superb. Recently I bought a Jane Powertwin (it comes in a single version too) again a great chair also with a front disc brake which will be handy for negociating (oops) capabilities cutting!
Best advice, give them a test drive, most shops let you, it'll need big wheels, not stroller ones, if it's easy to push and turn on concrete with one hand it should still be easy on grass. Fold it and unfold it a few times, see if it's easy to lift etc. Hope this helps!

I have an Icandy Apple (with the 4 wheel option) which is fab on rough ground and really light to push but certainly isnt light once folded as the frame is solid. Its also pretty pricey but I didnt mind the price or the fact that the chair was heavy when folded because it was absolutely brilliant on our 4 hour walks in the country park on all sorts of terrain! It was the only one with air tyres and all round suspension that I found.

Second vote for a Jane (pronounce hannay) although mine is a rebel. I took my son round Burghley in it the year they had that terrible mud and it was fab!

Hi, I looked on ebay and bought one similar to the red one above, with big wheels for £15!!!

I have used it and used it, its really light (aluminium frame) It has been across fields, over fences, done the school run, and I wouldn't have anything else. I find it a bit hard to fit in the car, along with all the other clobber that comes with kids.

I personally prefer the fixed front wheel, as the swivel ones jump about over rough ground, and you will end up fighting it to go in any particular direction.

My vote goes to Jane with a fixed front wheel. Ours survived 3 1/2 yrs hard labour living on a farm, walking xc courses, local shows every other weekend, walking the dogs through the hay field and jumping a 3* fence at Blenheim, (won a course walk with Eventing mag, baby was 2 weeks old, there was no way around the fence so had to go over it:))

It only gave up the ghost when 14 yr old daughter broke her leg and we pushed her around Warwick Castle in it:D, but friend repaired it and used it for several yrs more:)

The Jané ones are OK but not that light. The Phil & Teds three-wheeler is less bling to look at but lighter and very up to the terrain. We have an XTS Twister which is very good cross-country but is quite heavy.

I have got the teutonia spirit. It's a german make that has amazing wheels, suspension etc. We know a couple of people that have got one - a friend pushes hers through a menage leading 2 horses behind it with one hand! It has swivel front wheel ( that you can also lock ) and un-popable tyres. Google it...It's amazing, but they are only made to order and take upto 12 weeks. They come as a travel system or just pram / buggy etc. Definately reccommend!

xx
