My wonderful little staffy girl is in hospital having had spinal surgery on Monday to repair a slipped disc which had resulted in total paralysis of her back end, she has no feeling returned yet so have to just keep praying and crossing everything

Just back from visiting her, no change still but she did eat a small bowl of food while i was there which she hasn't been doing, other than that much the same :(

My lab had a similar operation and it took about 2 weeks before she was walking without us needing to support her, it does take a while for the inflammation to subside. Thinking of you x

Keeping everything crossed, i don't mind how long it takes just so long as she gets better, she has no bladder control either and isn't able to urinate on her own! What happened to your lab? was it an injury? how soon after op did deep pain return or was it never lost completely?

Tiggy just suddenly lost use of her back legs when we were out walking, I managed to get her to the car and to the vet,who did xrays and referred us to a specialist who did a myelogram (sp) and decided to operate. After about a month she returned to normal and had no further ill effects from this for the next 5 years. Sadly I lost her a couple of weeks ago to a tumour. I have just been looking through photos and miss her so much.

So sorry that you recently lost her but pleased that she was able to make a full recovery after her op....Maddie only had her op on Monday so i guess its early days still, the vet says he would like to see changes within a week so she has a few more days yet

Fingers, toes and paws crossed, I hope your girl is soon home with you. There seem to be a lot of poorly dogs on here at the moment, here's to them all returning to full health.

JDx

80% of these ops are eventually successful, so the neurosurgeon told me when we thought that was the problem a while back. Lots of healing vibes for your girl.

Don't despair! My neighbours had a Bassett with something similar. She was paralysed for some time, but her front legs worked, so they had a little trolley for her that went under her tum and she pulled herself along. At the time I, and others, wondered about the wisdom of it, but at the end of 6 months she was walking again and lived happily - without trolley - for several years. Meanwhile, all my prayers, and I'm sure your vet will guide you.

Thankyou for all your healing vibes, no change today, still no return of deep pain sensation, but they said will give her a full 7 days before making any decisions.
Rose Folly.....i know basset hounds are more prone to this problem, did your neighbours dog have the surgery do you know? and did she have bladder control while paralysed?
I have thought through all the options, i'e the wheels for her back end, whilst trying acupuncture, hydro therapy, physio etc, i've heard stories of other dogs not getting sensation back in the legs for months and then eventually returning to near normal movement so surely there is still hope beyond the 7 days.....but my concern in with her bladder control, can this return independantly of her legs?

Sending lots of vibes for your girl.

I worked in a vet that had a little dachshund (sp) that had the surgery done. He went in daily for his physio. He did have one of the little trolleys with wheels so he could still go for walks. His bladder had to be manipulated to get him to pee.

Sorry LittleLilly I lost track of this thread. No, the basset didn't have the surgery. At first she had zero bladder control but by carrying her out regularly - quite a job, almost like training a puppy - and with her slow but steady recovery anyway, she regained bladder control. She got very used to her back wheels, and was know in the village as the Trolley Dolly. I think it took over 6 months for her to recover fully.

I do so hope your baby is improving

Just wanted to add a quick update....Maddie is home now and on strict crate rest for several weeks, she has good deep pain sensation returned and voluntary tail movement (she just can't help wagging that tail :) ) She has a catheter in still as the vet feels it unlikely she has any bladder control at the moment so giving her longer with the catheter, she controls her bowels waiting for me to lift her out of the cage and onto her toilet pad. She had to go back in yesterday to have a new catheter put in as she pulled it out but was back home within a few hours. She is eating very well now and has done from the day she came home, we do some light pt with her every day to keep her joints moving and stimulate her toes. She is happy in herself, she plays with her teddies and bones all day in her cage, hiding them under 1 blanket then digging them all back out and moving them to the other end of the cage and burying them all agian under another blanket, occasionally a teddy gets decapitated and his insides carefully removed  She is wagging her tail more and more so just keeping fingers crossed that she continues to make steady improvements but most importantly she is now pain free and happy :)
