I’m away for a few days and would like to have my feed made up for OH. Do supplements degrade if mixed with each other for a few days or will they be ok? They will be left dry and only be dampened before feeding.

Incase it makes a difference its:
Equivite original
Magnesium oxide
Protexin gut balancer.

I would have it mixed with Hi-Fi molasses free and micronised linseed.

Surely if they're in a zip lock plastic bag / tupperware pot, they'd be fine?
Yeah I was planning on having them in a secure bag/tub but wasn’t sure if the minerals would degrade each other.

I could leave it unmixed. I don’t really trust OH to mix it properly 🫣😂 but will just tell him he needs to.

I do a weeks worth of dry supplements at a time, in air tight pots, can't say I've noticed any changes in the horse than from when I made them up daily.
Only exception perhaps might be salt? I know a few companies don't add salt to their supplements, but that might be a longer term storage thing than a few days :)

I have done this in the past with a horse which was on a load of different things. Just get a stack of small tupperwear boxes and pre-mix them, then add to feed immediately before feeding. I even wrote days of the week on them to make sure I remembered every day.

(The other advantage of this approach was to prevent other liveries helping themselves to my stuff!! - I was on a large yard at the time, and knew my supplements were going down a lot faster than I was using them, so I took them home, put them in one-day-at-a-time pots and problem solved!!!)

I think I read something about salt degrading them so that’s what made me wonder if mixing them together might too. I don’t add salt so maybe will be fine.

Thank you for the replies. 😁

I had same issue when my mum was ill, OH did step up, hopefully yours will too!

I would ask OH to give the tub a mix each day though, to make sure the right amount of each one is in each feed. They might settle in the tub so that some are at the top/bottom etc.

My plan was to have whole feeds ready so all supplements in with hifi and linseed (mixed up) so it would just be tip out into bucket, add water and mix before feeding.

I was worried he might not mix the supplements through properly and she would get a mouthful and spit it all out so that’s why I wanted it all mixed up for him. I’m only a slight control freak with the horses. 🫣

The only one there you might have a problem with is the gut balancer. He could probably manage 'a mixed bag plus a scoop of this'?

Having said that I'd be fine mixing them all so long as they stay dry.

I make all my supplements for the week & leave in zip lock bags so they just need to be added to the mash each day - it always seems fine!
