Hi, I have had a pre-purchase 5 star vetting done today. The vet passed the horse but said that there was no rider available at the dealer's premises, so couldn't see the horse exercised whilst ridden. He said that sometimes horses go well whilst lunged etc, but when ridden occasionally show lameness after. The dealer agreed to have a rider available, but told the vet that as the horse was only just backed and ridden a couple of times he didn't think it was necessary, and that the horse had never cantered with a rider for more than a couple of minutes. The dealer told me when I went to view the horse that he had been ridden at least 6 or 7 times and I saw him cantered with a rider on him for about 6 minutes.

The horse has excellent bloodlines and was bred to be an eventer. It is a lot of money (£15000), the very max I can afford, but have been looking for ages for something of this calibre. Should I be worried and is there any way I can protect myself if I go ahead and the horse soon goes lame? Please give your thoughts.

I would not be happy with the dealer for not being totally honest with what the horse has done, not having a rider which is standard and as a dealer he knows the procedure or the vet for not making contact to tell you that the vetting was not going to be as planned so giving you the opportunity to either be there to ride it yourself or wait until a rider was available.
Not sure what I would do, it is a lot of money to spend on a horse that you may now have questions about, trust in the dealer must now be in doubt also.

For that money I'd invest a few £100's on some good xrays of feet and joints - maybe even back to be sure there is nothing going on that might cause a problem later on.

I'd even suggest getting the vet to have a look at the horse after ridden exercise - and be there when the vet is taking xrays so you can discuss with him/her as he goes.

I'd not be happy with a dealer telling me one thing and the vet something else so I'd ask them directly why they did that and see if they could dream up a satisfactory answer!

could you please pm me who the dealer is thanks.

About a year ago my friend brought a event horse from dealer had it vetted 4 weeks later it was in the nackers paddock so to speak he to was similar money I can let you know if it is the same dealer if you like.
