Hi, I have had a pre-purchase 5 star vetting done today. The vet passed the horse but said that there was no rider available at the dealer's premises, so couldn't see the horse exercised whilst ridden. He said that sometimes horses go well whilst lunged etc, but when ridden occasionally show lameness after. The dealer agreed to have a rider available, but told the vet that as the horse was only just backed and ridden a couple of times he didn't think it was necessary, and that the horse had never cantered with a rider for more than a couple of minutes. The dealer told me when I went to view the horse that he had been ridden at least 6 or 7 times and I saw him cantered with a rider on him for about 6 minutes.
The horse has excellent bloodlines and was bred to be an eventer. It is a lot of money (£15000), the very max I can afford, but have been looking for ages for something of this calibre. Should I be worried and is there any way I can protect myself if I go ahead and the horse soon goes lame? Please give your thoughts.
