Well I took Skye for her scan this morning (although I already 'knew' she was in pup), I've always been told that between the 24th and 35th day you shouldn't feel or prod at their abdomens, the first thing the vet did was really feel and not in a soft fashion either, she was pulling her about and really pushing on her abdomen, I was going to say something but didn't....

Shouldn't a vet know better?

TBH I wouldn't bother going again as she just confirmed what I knew for an extra £20.00

Good news then but I hate to say 'I told you so' from your original post last week!!!!!!!!!!

I know! After your post I was going to cancel... Typical really!

the feeling and proding may be as a rule for people that breed their bitches for the sake of it when they dont actually know what they are doing so that the bitch is not hurt and the pups not damaged???? whereas people that are good breeders may know what they are feeling like the vet would but joe bloggs may not????? maybe wrong???but thats what i would have thought as yes a vet should know better if its a real nono. good luck with the pups bet your excited, i still cant get over how small and cute they are when born hehe

The vet was useless and wouldn't say

I even saw their little spines...cute! She also showed me Skye's bladder.

Foxview - I just checked my 'bible' and it says between the 24th and 35th day do not let the vet do an external examination as the 'pups' are at a critical stage and could be damaged, they must check for pregnancy by other means (ultrasound).

I hope she hasn't done anything....

yep i have the same "bible" as you severnmiles.
And it does say that "foetuses are at such a critical stage at about 24 to 35 days of pregnancey, it is extremely unwise to let anyone try to feel for the foetuses. If it is vital for you to know whether your bitch is pregnant, let a veterinary syrgeon make the diagnosis using some other technique."

I hope your bitch is ok and the vet wasnt to rough with her.

There you are you quoted word for word..I couldn't quite be bothered!

Ace book isn't it though.

She was quite rough, I was cringing to be honest and Skye just tensed up and tried to sit down. Silly vet!

It is a great book, it really helped me with my first litter and i keep picking it up now and doing some swotting up incase my bitch is pregnant.
hope it goes well, good luck and please keep me updated, or i will have to ask you...lol

in that case the silly vet should know better, and now thinking on it when i was working in the vets they always ultasounded the bitch no matter what stage.
i hope she hasnt done any damage to them coz that would be dreadful. hope all goes ok

Awww hunny!
I wouldnt worry, of course he shouldnt have been rough or IMO done anythng more then the scan but my childhood bitch was prodded a poked all the way through by stupid mother and older brothers-all the pups were fine

Aww, bless! Fingers crossed then, she seems ok. I wouldn't have a bitch scanned again though, for one thing she was a bit stressed about it.

Cant be fun for a bitch that isnt over keen on the vet-hell it's stressfull enough for us to be done!

Family friend breeds Danes and gets his scanned by a lady at a grooming parlor...odd I know but she is wonderfull, never rough at all,nly does the scan and makes a big fuss of the bitch so she is happy and relaxed all the time.

Maybe if you wanted to have another scan/another bitch done you could look for someone like her in your area??
Best fo luck and rememebr we want HUNDREDS of photos!!!!!!

Oh don't say that! You'll be telling me to stop posting them!! I will bore you all!!

Well I didn't see the point, I told mum I know she's in pup (granny knows you see
wink.gif
) I just knew, bit like humans just know! The woman wouldn't tell me how many anyway which the sole purpose as I wanted to know how many to expect (so I know when she's finished and not just having a break).

Funny thing is the farmer has the same vets, the same scanning machine out to do his Ewes and its £1.00 a Ewe yet £20.00 for a dog....
