Planning on putting my elephant in foal in 08...would like to keep jumping her competitively untill the end of september! i have known several mares to do this very successfully.so my question is for that to work when should she be covered??? also any random advice from anyone?

Hannah was covered in March and competed Elementary dressage until August when she was just getting a bit uncomfortable. So, if you wanted to compete until the end of September I would think of having her covered in May/June. But just be aware that when she has been covered she will have a good couple of weeks of not doing that much while the foetus secures itself and develops a heart beat etc.

excellent i thought it was that kind of time she would need covered...and it fits in perfectly cause i will be doing my university final exams! i've been reading back through your blog...so exciting

It seems like so long ago now!

I would not put a mare into foal late especially if they are maiden - you should not have a huge problem competing till September regardless.

My mare was 17 when I decided to have a foal and she had other ideas. Took lots of vet visits, lots of drugs and several visits to the stallion and she was having none of it. In the end it was dope, bondage and rape I'm afraid (vet's choice of words, not mine!).

So what I'm saying is you may be lucky and she may take first time, but if she's not so fertile you might have a much later foal than you planned. Good luck!

Put her in foal in April / May. You won't be able to ride her until the fetus is around six weeks old. Then you can ride her as normal for 6 months. At the stud I sent my horse to the stud owner took her grade A showjumper to Olympia when it was 5 months pregnant.

Just be aware that your plans may have to alter depending on your horse. Mine went to stud at the beginning of April and it took her 5 months to conceive!Horses!
