Hi Guys,

Just wondered if anyone elses mares get really bad feet during pregnancy??

I have a TB and she hasnt got the best feet but has rarely lost shoes in the 10 years i have had her, however since being in foal she has now lost two shoes!!!

Anyone else had this?

And also if you do go bare foot, are boa boots or Old Mac boots the best?

Thanks :-)

Barefoot all the way. The feet spread so that is why shoes are coming off. None of ours have shoes, they have been rough this year due to lack of moisture but its swings and roundabouts a little rain and they will begin to look healthier.

My warmblood mare always had bad feet and farrier told us to leave shoes off altogether while in foal. after a year's break from shoes her feet are brilliant! really strong and much better condition.

hmmmmm still not sure, she is a tb with thin soles.

Any ideas of things to put on them to help harden her soles? as we have stone/gravel yard and as soon as she touches them she is hopping.

Other thing is that i am needing to keep her in work as she had the first month off and was a total deliquient! Too much of an active brain!

So have people used old mac's or boa boots?? dont want to take the risk of hacking her bare foot!

One of my mares does not do well barefoot and we re-shod her when she came back from stud. After the foal was born she also suffered from being barefoot so she is currently wearing plastic shoes and is better for them.

Kevin Bacon hoof dressing is fab.

Bloss is still in ridden work so has all her shoes on and ive not had any problems at all, didnt last time either. I dont use anything on her feet apart from the Kevin Bacon sometimes if i can be bothered - i know that sounds awful but she dosent really need it! However i know other people who've used it on horses with bad feet and say its brilliant stuff, my farrier really rates it too.

Mine stayed shod throughout - had shoes off for 6 weeks when baby was born, but gradually got lamer and lamer so I had them put back on.

Didn't really have a problem with her feet at all, BUT my farrier always says how unusual her feet are - they never look long as they just don't spread, they grow straight down!

it might be now due to being pregnant the good nutrtion she was putting into growing good horn is now going into producing baby, how far gone is she and what are you feeding her ?

it might be giving her some vitamins and mineral supplement or balancer would give her enough nutrient for the foal and herself,

bare foot boots the best are cavallos, the old macs are a pain in the bum to put on and weight a ton, the boa the wire can snap on them and i dont like the desgin both are also hardwork to put on, cavallo are dead easy and are almost like just putting on an overreach boot and you can buy 'gaiters' for them to stop dirt getting insdie and rubbing
