This is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but..

Ive just started doing dressage and wondered if you could do prelim tests in sitting trot and not rising? Is it accepted? Would it be frowned upon? Thanks!!

you can do whatever you want. i would however be careful that your horse is going forwards enough when you are doing your sitting trot, as at problem level the horse should be in a nice soft outline and working nicely through from behind into the hand.

In my experience MOST people at this level are better off doing rising trot. Alot of people who sit at these lower levels stop their horses relaxing and using their backs and so the trot strides shorten or slow down and the quality of the pace and movements deteriorates.

Not meaning to offend anyone, just speaking from my experience as a judge.

totally agree. it is really important to have the horse going forward you see too many horses jogging along which is not what the judge wants to see .the horse needs to move forward and swing through its back but not rush.a young horse would really develope better in rising trot unless you are brilliant at sitting. a dressage saddle can also have a negative effect.i never rode in a dressage saddle until my horse was at medium level and won enough money to pay for it.my daughter now does all the riding but her young horse is in a gp saddle and winning novice tests but she is often the only person in one
