can anyone give me tips on starting my boy on medium trot and medium canter please? ALSO - what I should be looking for to know we are on the way to getting it right!

All I can recommend is getting an instructor who knows what they are doing.
I feel that you really need those eyes on the ground until you develop a feel for what is going on underneath you.

I agree with Bonzabean - or at least get someone to video you. What fees like lengthening at first can look nothing like so you do need those eyes on the ground to tell you what is working and whether it is correct.

Agree with the previous posts...
With both you need to make sure they do not run into the ground and get faster as opposed to extending out a little

My instructor had me focus on collecting in trot and canter before trying extension.
