Can anyone offer me any advice?
Have a couple of adverts on Preloved, without even a phonecall etc.
Tonight i have had an email from the States, asking about shipping etc. Now it does sound ligitimate but I am not sure. As I apprecite there are a lot of very clever scammers out there.
How do I know if it is a scam?
If it isn't how do I make sure I receive the funds safely?
Thanks in advance

It is probably a scam there is a lot of similar ones about at the moment. At the very least I would be replying saying that I would want a spoken conversation with them via phone and would answer any questions regarding shipping if I thought she/he would be a suitable person for the horse.

What did the person ask? Was it specifics about your ad or generic 'what is the final price you will accept for (item)' type questions? And yes, I did get several scam emails with that exact sentence in them! As for payment, PayPal or bank transfer. No cheques.

Unless the horse is something marvellous or has specific sought after breeding, I should assume that it is a scam. Why would any-one want to pay for the shipping costs of an 'ordinary' horse to America, when there are plenty of horses for sale over there?

The only thing with preloved is you have to sign up etc( im 99% sure there is a fee to!) to get the contact details of the person advertising. So people dont bother which is maybe why you havnt had phonecalls.
usually these sorts of emails are scams and a waste of time.

sorry sorry sorry do not go there - to me i read scam as soon as read e mail US - please check check check and check again as def a scam hun xx

Thank you for all the responses. this person has asked if they can call me, so may try and sound them out a little bit - worries me though as scammers are getting so clever!
If I did go ahead and managed to get access to a credit card machine would that be a safe way of collecting payment? I could ask my bosses if I could use theirs and pay them the charges.

Only use PayPal - if you used a credit card account you would be liable for chargeback

If you use PayPal and send it recorded (courier) then you are covered as a seller.

However I'd also correspond with this person and make sure the story checks out - ask them what type of horse it is for etc.

Thank you for all your help.
I was giving him the benefit of doubt and responded to his questions, it turns out he wanted the adjustable version.
Had a reply from Preloved too and they checked his history and appears he was ligitimate.
But you never know after hearing about so many people loosing so much money!!
Oh well saddles still for sale - and they have got to go as I have found a new one today, please Mr Bank Manager be nice to me.

I know its not quite the same but I sold a saddle via ebay to a lady in America. She paid for the shipping costs and we communicated through email and she paid me using paypal with no problems at all. In fact she was delighted with the saddle and left me excellent feed back so it can be done.

Tell them u require cleared funds up front. Then they pay up front, you transfer funds from paypal to bank and once cleared then send it. If they are genuine they won't mind waiting if u explain uk has had problem with scams. Also if not genuine this will put them off as they will see that ur on to them.

I think it can be quite hard to get good english style saddles in usa and more people are riding english. Importing seems sensible. It's the people in africa with poor english who want to buy my 3500 quid part bred arab that alert my scam sensors!
