So I think I have narrowed it done to pe for a new turnout rug! If anyone has one would you mind answering some questions on them?

are they true to size? Or is it better to go 3inches smaller as they do look enormous!
Do they dry quite quickly? My horse has to wear a turnout at all times so don't like him standing around in a wet rug for hours.
are they heavy rugs? Are they very heavy when wet?
anyone every had a problem with leaks on the heavy or medium weight rugs?

i can't decide between 300g titan and a liner or the 450g with 1000d...... Horse currently in medium with stable underneath, so must total about 400g all together. I'm thinking the 300g may be more useful as I can use it as another medium....but them I think I will get annoyed with the liner system! And he does already have 1 proper (but a bit small medium) So the 450g is more practical.....but then it's not as useful.......

which would you go for?

I've got a few and found them true to size.

They do seem quite heavy compared to others I have to admit and can be hard going when wet, mine take quite a while to dry. I tend to leave them on the horse to dry though which speeds it up - I've never had a leak and PE rugs are dual purpose so can be used in the stable too.

I did buy a liner for one of mine but it drove me mad as it's only attached at the front and back so the middle flops all over the place when trying to put it on!

The outers of the rugs are so sturdy that to me they always seem a heavier weight than they're meant to be - I used a 40g one for a lot of last winter and the 200g one I've got seems much thicker than my Fal 220g.

I personally wouldn't ever have one of their 450g rugs as I don't think I'd ever be able to find a use for it - unless to sweat a few kilos off of the lad!

Nice rugs and true to size if not a little larger. However, I have a Rambo Duo and my horse wears it all the time all year round when needed. A horse I used to look after had the PE Trio and in comparison was the poorer quality of the 2 rugs.
It was a lot heavier when wet, took ages to dry, the velcro didnt stay sticky for as long as the Rambo ones did and I found it rather cumbersome to handle.

Therefore the Rambo Duo with the liner system was the better of the 2. I know your not specifically asking that question but if your shelling out hard earned cash then in the long term the Rambo would be in my opinion the better of the rugs to invest in.

Really lovely rugs for the price. My 6ft6 size was true to size, I had the 450g storm buster with neck integrated. Lovely deep and thick.

Yes, it is a heavy rug, but I suppose you would expect a 450 rug with a thick outer to be on the heavier side.

Never had a problem with leaks, but from a recent thread some others have. (Although rugs sent back at replaced)

If you don't want to be leaving him in a wet/damp rug, (and finances allow) you could alwaay opt for the 300 with two liners, then alternate them? Will be more £ though.
I don't think they take longer than other rugs to dry, but when they've had a good 24hrs plus of heavy rain they can take a little while to dry!

I've got the 450g ones for my horses. They must have worn them 10 times in the past two years as they're just so heavyweight that I save for -10 temperatures. I'd buy the Titan 300 myself.
I love PE rugs. My two wear their 100g Trio outers almost constantly. One lives out and has been toasty warm and bone dry in all the rain we've had. Because they're designed to be worn inside and out, I leave mine on my stabled horse and it dries quickly this way.

I have the 450g stormbuster for my 11.2hh welsh boy and its a fab rug. Bit heavy (but as its only a 4'9 that's not really an issue) but very snug, covers him completely and doesn't leak. He's wearing it every day and no rubs or anything so I'm pretty pleased with it.

I didn't like mine at all. True to size, maybe a little generous and quite deep. Mine was very heavy, took ages to dry, the Velcro for the neck cover was sharp and rubbed my boy's boulders and he hated the elastic around the top of the neck. Sold it and bought a weatherbeeta orican, a much better rug IMO.

I bought one this time last year and wish I'd gone for a Rambo now.

I was happy with the PE at first and in the dry they are good at keeping the horses warm but they are very heavy when wet and the rug is now making my horse a touchy and extra itchy on his withers which says there's an issue. For now he's back in his old mended 1000 x rug but I will be investing in Rambo after Christmas

Thank you all! Perhaps I will have to reconsider.... He's not huge in the build department and I can't be dealing with really heavy wet rugs! It's bad enough if they are only wet!

I've had PE rugs for my last 2 Sec D's. I've had to go a size smaller for both horses. I've only had the no-fill, the 40g and a fleece, as my horses don't need medium or heavyweight rugs. I think they're great rugs, and fit really well for my type of horse.

I also had a Rhino for my last mare, which was a good, waterproof rug, but too tight and narrow around her neck and shoulders (she was very big and deep). I would have had one for my current boy, but I think PE's are made for the chunkier types.

I like the depth of the PE rug but they didn't fit my ID well over the wither/shoulder area whereas the Rambo and Weatherbeeta rugs were better fit. PE rugs also rip easier than the other two brands and one of my lads is an expert rug ripper!

I dont have their very heavyweights but have 2 horses with 200gs (and 2 with 100gs) and have no issues. I think the depth of rug is a bonus so long as they are a good fit everywhere :). I don't find they get any wetter than any other brand of rug I've tried, they dry quickly when I bring the horses in. They are also better at selfrighting than any other brand I've tried after a roll in field, which I think is due to the strap that goes over the tail. I have never had one leak (and mine have their rugs for everything from rainsheets up) and have been out in torrential rain in them. I have combo 200gs, and detach-a-neck other rug weights and no problems with any. Horses I use them on range from an ex racer, to a 17.2hh WB, and varying stamps of ISH.

Sizing wise Ive found they measure exactly what they are supposed to, (but are deeper than many other brands), but other brands sometimes come up small so I'd measure a current rug that fits :).

We have just been through a rhino...... Never again! I like the new weatherbeetas so I'll have a look at them!

We have all 7 in PE rugs now, keep an eye out for the fairly regular discounts on their FB page if you do go for one. I would make sure you get the variety with the front leg pleat though as I personally think they provide much more freedom. The heavyweights can get a bit heavy if drenched, but as they are designed for inside as well, we leave them on and they dry off overnight. The horses keep warmer that way and the rugs dry quicker!

The rugs seem to fit our lot well, and are pretty true to size, but this will depend on the shape of your horse. It's like us trying on pairs of jeans, some styles/cuts will suit people better than others..

The only downside I've found is that the velcro on the neck straps can start to come off with regular use, but I'm happy to fix them.

I'm following this post avidly, as I love my rugs... lol...(see another thread... :) and the P.E was the next on my list (love the scrunchy at the Poll to stop the slipping)
But...

I have said to myself, time and time again over the past few weeks that it has been worth the money spent.
My boy is out 24/7 with little shelter and is really putting the 'Rambo Optimo' to the test (bought 2 years ago on a whim.. lol... as you do...?! ) And it has not leaked as others, even in the heaviest of rain and wind that is thrown at it, he is warm and dry underneath with only the 100g (which is velcro front/ clipped back) The only issue is that it is very generous.. he is a 6'6 and I swear that I could get a 7' ft in it..

O.k, so I have not said about P.E but after reading this thread and what has been said, I will stick with my Rambo's *without the scrunchy neck*

:) hope this is some help.. although not so much about P.E rugs.. :/

I only have the fly rug designed for wet weather but the quality is good. I'd like to get the 40g T/O as the rugs I've seen on other people's horses, look fab.

If you're thinking of buying their stable wraps and the turnout boots, I can highly recommend them. They are brilliant.

I am another PE fan. Love them. They don't leak or rub. Much more generous around the shoulder and chest than my Rambo wug and far easier to handle.

To be honest ours live in the same rug day and night so we don't have to bother with the weight issue when wet. Ours are fully clipped and in the 450g and last year when it went below freezing we just put a 100g liner underneath.at the moment it's almost too warm.
Depends on your budget, if you can afford the trio system, that will cover all eventualities. Failing that, maybe the 350 plus a couple of liners. We always go for the 1600 outer which is tougher.

I have a few of the PE rugs now, and they fit my arab and welsh D x arab very well.

However, for both girls I have gone with lighter weight rugs and purchased liners of varying weights, so that I can rug according to the weather. I really am not a fan of any heavy weight rugs as a) they ALL get really heavy when wet and I just can't cope with them and b) realistically a HW gets used for such a short period of time in the year.

The liners are only attached front and back, so there is a knack to picking the rugs up and putting them on - but we have got this sussed now (and having the attachment on the front makes it ever so much easier than a back only attachment! ;) )

My Welsh D x does also have some Amigo rugs, which fit her nicely - but her Rhino rug just does not fit her anywhere near as well.

I had a trio system several years ago for an old horse, but I didn't buy the kit this time - I just bought bits and pieces as they were in their reduced day sales :). I much prefer the LW outer and liners and a HW

I'm a big PE rug fan, my mare has one in most weights now thanks to last years fantastic winter sale & their regular discounts!!
I think the fit is true to size - they are deeper than most rugs but I really like this feature as I find so many rugs have the 'mini-skirt' appearance when on. Their neck design is great too as they don't get blown down and bunch up near the withers, I have found that they haven't affected her mane growth either which may be due to the fact that they are quite "puffy" and don't weigh down on the mane as much as the more common designs.
They are really brilliant rugs, and always stay put - they never slip to the side, despite high winds and lots of hooning about in the field - she has really tested them! Hers don't slip back and cut into the chest either which other brands have done, they haven't rubbed her anywhere either - she is quite a sensitive girly.

They are fairly heavy weight rugs, the fill does seem more generous than other brands of the same fill, but this probably due to the quality and thickness of the outer material rather than there actually being a difference in filling - I would personally go for the 300g, and buy an additional liner for when its really cold. My horse is a wimpy fully clipped TB type who really does feel the cold, and the 300g is the one she wears most, she is always nice and snug in it. She does have the 450g but I keep it for extreme cold, she has only worn it for a few days and that was during the very cold weather we had where it was absolutely freezing! Saying this, although they are heavier that horsewares etc, I have never struggled to put them on / take them off, even when they are completely soaked. None of my PE's have ever leaked or been damaged, so have never soaked through to the skin - but the best way to dry the outside off would be to leave on overnight as they can be worn inside & out. When they have been very heavy and wet I have sometimes hung them up to dry and they've taken a day or two to completely 'recover' - but on overnight they are completely dry the next morning.
Hope that helps! x

Yes thank you! All very helpful!

They do sound like what I am after...... And most seem pleased with them!

Just really can't decide on weight..... This year has been unusually mild.... I've known him in previous winters have a rhino heavy weight and a stable on. He has had 3 clips this year and will be having his fourth in the next few days.......

Ohhhh rug decisions can be so difficult sometimes! May be I should just buy all of them ;)

I would go for Bucas or Horseware if a horse is wearing it 24/7. They are so light & easy to handle. Some of mine are 18 years old & are still going strong!

I find them generous too and I'm sure they say on their website they are a generous fit. Lovely rugs though, don't find them heavy but I don't have a 450g rug. I prefer a lighter rug and then liners if needed. Like the neck covers too as they are a snug fit and don't flap around. Never had one rub.

With all this wet weather I decided to give up on the PE rug and change to Rambo. The PE rugs are just so heavy when wet and I didn't want my horse under that weight day after day. He's 5'9" in PE and 6' in Rambo.
HTH.
