3 of my horses are in need of new turnouts. I have narrowed it down to Premier Equine, who use 1680d outer and do a 100g fill.

My question is, before I spend a fortune, what type of horse do you have these on?

The rugs I currently have are not a great fit on my Gypsy and Sec C - they seem to come too high up the crest and then are a slightly snug fit around the neck.

What height, weight/type do Premier Equines fit, in your experience?

Thanks!

I use their sweet itch hoody and it comes up bigger than the similar Rambo. I'd say a size bigger. The Rambo is quite snug across my chunky cobs chest and the premier one is very roomy.

We have them on a 13.3 Welsh partbred (old fashioned section C build), a 15.1 section D, a 14.3 show cob and a 10.3 veteran section A. No rubs :) My D is losing his mane but I think that's unrelated and he's doing it overnight in stable rug.

15.2 irish sports horse. Lives in his 247 and not a rub anywhere. Never leaks. Never moves. I got the 40g outer and will be getting liners for it. They tend to be warmer than average.

I bought one for my arab and it didn't fit well - I think it suits chunkier types. However the main issue was that it leaked even in light rain and blimey it was heavy when wet. I ended up giving it to a friend with a chunky cob and they used it in the stable.

I have their turnouts on my 15.1 traditional cob, 15.3 PRE mare and my young 16.2 sells Francais. Bizarrely I find the fit good on all 3!! None of my manes rub. The cob and mare are in 6'3 if that helps on size!

To put a spanner in the works! I find that if your horse is stabled and turned out in day they are fab. If your horses lives out 24-7 I find them rubbish they tend to get really heavy and waterlogged in the bad weather. I much prefer amigo rugs the 1200denier ones not the cheaper 600denier the cheapest place I can find at the moment is millbury hill they are £90. My last one lasted 5 years no rip no tears and fab in bad weather. Only sold it as horse died.

I found they came up big in that they were very deep but were not generous enough on the chest. I have a tb with high withers and big shoulders so they were so tight he couldn't move his front legs there but so long they came down to the hocks and knees.

He suits older weatherbeetas (takas) and FAL. Mark Todd and Amigo come up snug on him.

Look up axiom rugs on ebay - they do an 1800 denier ballistic nylon outer and choice of either 180g or 300g fill. Pretty sure I saw a couple sell for £25 quid each the other day and people on here rave about how good they are!

Not impressed with mine- the lw leaks badly, the two hws are both badly torn, impossibly heavy when wet and the clips have broken.
My WB 1200d on the other hand were much cheaper and are merrily going through their 3rd winter wiout a sign of wear

Bucking the trend, my thug has been in a 1680 40g or a 100g Trio outer through this winter & wore same from mid Feb last year - both still doing a great job :)
No mane rubbing despite being worn 24/7 and lifted daily for quick-flick when not riding. Neither holed or ripped - and he IS very good at trying to convert rugs to string vests :wink3:
Neither were new as both were on a solid dales pony (14.3+) the full winter before.

I like them, but they DO seem be marmite :)

I have one - they do come up big on size - and the mare is well built. I personally wouldn't have another one, I find them very heavy and in proper rain it is not waterproof. I have yet to find a perfect rug, but value for money the Amigo wins my vote every time :)

Thanks so much for all the info!!

I have looked at various other makes, but no-one else seems to do something 1680d with only 100g fill. These 3 haven't been in anything heavier all winter and have never come in cold, so I'm worried that even the Axiom (which I did look at!) would make them too hot with the extra 80 of fill.

I love Weatherbeetas but again, they don't come in 100g unless you have a combo, or not that I've found anyway. I went off all Horseware after a spate of front clips pulling out of their fastenings :(

They are out during the day and in at night, so hopefully won't be too un-waterproof... (fingers crossed!)

I think I will have to try them, and hope I'm one of the ones they work for!

hope you do better than I did with them. Threw it away in the second year as it leaked like a sieve and it was so heavy that I couldn't lift it. I felt so sorry for the poor horse who had to put up with such a heavy wet rug.

It was the biggest waste of money that I have ever spent on a rug. Thought it was just me until I came on here and found lots of people with equally heavy and unwaterproof PE's. Contacted PE but all they would do was offer me 10% off another PE. I explained that if they were the last make on earth I wouldn't want another.

So it cost me a lot of money for what a thought was a really good quality rug and I had to pay the same amount 18 months later for another make which turned out to be 100% waterproof, light when wet and I can lift and hang up the wet rug easily. It took 2 of us to hang up a wet PE. Very resentful at the money I wasted for what turned out to be rubbish.

Again horseware is the make for me and wouldn't use anything else. They do a bravo in 100g in 1200d. Iv never know the front clips to pull out .

PE- wouldn't ever touch them again, horrid heavy leaking rugs, total waste of money

I've just had another look at the Bravo 100g, and they have the T-clips, not the leadrope style ones, at the front. Unobservant me! Twas the leadrope style ones which I had trouble with.

Bum. Now I'm undecided again :(

I have a couple but wouldn't buy anymore! Use the 450g as a stable rug on chunky cob as it doesn't have enough movement in it and is a fairly snug fit on his chest. The lining has somehow torn. Has rubbed his mane where neck cover joins (fleecy bit). Again as others have said....very heavy especially when wet and take ages to dry.
Love the Amigos, seem to have really improved. Mark Todd are fab but don't do the 100g. Have you thought about Swish equestrian rugs? Have a couple and they seem to fit the cobs nicely. Think they only do 1200d though.

Thanks!

I have Swish at the moment - they are too high on the neck on my 2 cobby types which makes the chest tight. Good rugs otherwise and the Customer Service is just fab, but I really want something that fits the boys better. On the big mare the x surcingles are at their longest and only just go round her. They fit horse 4, the TB type, perfectly though, hence only needing 3 new ones! :)

THEY DON'T FIT!!!

Tried one on the Sec C and it was too high and tight on his neck. Didn't even bother putting one on the Gypsy Cob. They are on their way back, and I am fed up with rug shopping :(

Think they may have to go naked again :p

I've got a HW Winter Buster on Alf. He's usually a 6"9, but this one is 6"6 and fits him very nicely. He's 17.1hh with huge shoulders and a big muscly neck/bum. He is out 24/7 and it hasn't leaked/rubbed him/annoyed me at all. Lovely quality rug

I love them. My two are both 16.3-17hh and chunky. The PE's fit them really nicely - especially on the shoulders where other rugs have rubbed, and are nice and deep so don't look like mini skirts on them. Luckily they're both the same size so they both have a lightweight each, then A has a 100g rug and M has a 200g. I also have a 100g liner and a 200g liner so between all the rugs and liners they can each have 0g/100g/200g/300g at the same time with minmal cost to me. It works very well and worth thiking about if the horses are the same size.

If you sign up to their newsletters they'll send you a daily e-mail with 20% off offers. If you can't wait for a bagain, they also have a code on their Facebook page for 10% off things not already reduced. I've never bought anything full price!

I've looked Fara, but they don't seem to do anything above 600 denier with a 100g fill, and 600 denier on my 2 boys would be shredded in minutes :(

This, in fact, is what happens:

The top one was worn for one day, the bottom for about a week :p
