prescription from vet?

I recently bought 32ml Metacam from the vet and it was just over £18. I have seen online 100ml for £22.99.

I use it about 3 times a week for my dog who has a metal plate in his leg which sometimes gives him pain after a more strenuous walk. (his walks are usually sedate, but occasionally he likes to have a mad fling if a hare pops up!)

can I ask my vet to give me a prescription so that I can buy elswhere? Might he charge for the prescription and if so approx how much?
 
Vets are now obliged to give you the prescription even if you fill it somewhere else. I think they are allowed to make a nominal charge but I dont know the figure. You can have your prescriptions filled by Hyperdrug/ Equine Pharmacy.
 
To get a perscription from the vet to buy on line is easy. They do insist you have the consultation with your dog and like to follow this up over a time period to ensure the medication is still correct for the problems.

I have used Vets Direct and the tablets for my dogs have been so much cheaper. I spoke to the vet about this and asked if they could price match. It was explained that was not possible and were very helpful with providing a perscription.
 
Vets have to give you a presciption if you ask and want to take it elsewhere, they are not allowed to demand you buy it from them. They are, however, allowed to charge for it. Please ensure you buy from a reputable distributor as there are some dodgy ones out there on the net that appear to be the same drug, but may not be the some strength/ quality/ etc.
 
As far as I was aware your vet cannot charge you for a prescription but will only give you one for a certain period of time - max 6 months at which time they check the dog etc again and then issue another.

I regularly get a prescription from my vet for long term treatments and things like spot on etc.
 
vets cant charge you for prescriptions - that may change in the future, but for now we have to write a prescription if an owner asks for it and are not allowed to charge anything for it. we still have to see the animal every 6 months to be allowed to prescribe though.
 
My rottie Boo is practically drinking bottles of Metacam after his cruciate ligament repair - fortunately he is covered by insurance!
