Afternoon all!

I want to give my instructor a little pressie before I go away for my hols, as she has been so helpful and encouraging, and really helped me improve! I only started weekly lessons in February, and I feel like I'm almost a different rider now, thanks to her.

What do you think would be a nice little gift to her, to show her I really appreciate all shes done for me?

So far, I was thinking:
  • Body brush decorated with her horses name
  • Saddle cloth embroidered with her horse's name (size might be an issue here though)
  • Headcollar embroidered with her horse's name (again size might be an issue!)

Does anyone have any suggestions? For the Intructors out there - What would you like to get/ what has been your favourite present from a student?

Thankyou HHO-ers, any help would be greatly appreciated!

T_G xx

I normally get my instructors a bottle of wine, but I like the body brush idea though :D

When my last instructor left I bought her a keyring with a horse on that looked like her horsey :)

Wine is good if you are sure your instructor drinks...When I used to teach I was given a bottle of wine a couple of times...I do not drink...still my Mum enjoyed it :D Body brush sounds ok and you can't get the wrong size in that...however, if you know your instructor's horse can you not guess what size headcollar/saddlecloth it would have? I would like any of those presents :D :D

I think your instructor will really appreciate the thought you have put into the present, I think one of the personalised ones would be lovely! If it is the instructor's own horse could you not find out/ask someone else what size to buy?

I've got to admit I am boring, I only ever buy my instructors alcohol to say thanks :D They seem to like it...:p

So speaks Lush Number 1 :p :D :D.

To be honest, I would stick with buying a bottle too TG. Unless I knew someone well then it's the fail-safe option :).

I like being given wine :D

Wine might be good, but I have no idea if she drinks! I'll have a mosey round her facebook and see ;)

If it is her own and not a school project, ask the YM what size to get :)

I might do that, as I'm utterly clueless as to whether he's Cob or Full size! Hes a lovely 14.2 welshie (I think!) but hes quite 'big' for a 14.2 if that makes any sense...

I'll ask the YM when I see her! With the body brush, there's a place near my uncle where they (and this sounds odd) burn a name into wooden things, with a kind-of soldering iron thing. I thought I could take a body brush in and they could put her horse's name on it :)

I'd find it pretty weird if a student bought me something personalised....

I'd go for the alcohol or something like a box of chocs. xx

Why'd you find it weird?

I think alcohol must be a universal pressie :D

ETA: If it makes a difference, a girl in our lesson group gave our instructor a horseshoe with her horse's name on it, and she liked it :)

I would find it a bit weird too... a student brought me a personalised gift recently and, while it was very kind of them to think of me, it was a bit...odd. A bottle always goes down well though!

I'm inclined to agree actually, you can't go far wrong with a bottle. I think personalised gifts are a bit...too personal :p I think I would be uncomfortable with anything more than just a bottle of wine if it were me.

I wouldn't get her alcohol. It is a dead easy present and shows no thought or originality.

Why not get her some special handcream or bath soak? Something she can enjoy for a while.

I dunno...just think its a bit creepy? Like, you're not friends, you pay her..

Its probably just me x

Yep agree with this ^^^^^

I also agree with wine - the kids on my yard buy me nothing, but they do pay me. The adults dont buy me anything either!!! However if they did a nice cold bottle of pinot to enjoy after a long day at the yard would be the best ever. That or a bottle of gin for a G&T with lime. Or Champagne even....or vodka, to have with tonic...or even a 6 pack of beer so I can have a nice larger shandy at the end of the day!

Sorry, got a bit carried away there. Alcohol is best.

Personally. I don't find the idea of something personalised creepy but I do find it a bit babyish. hey. that's just me but if the instructor is an adult a personalised body brush, to me is a bit babyish. I would be happy someone had put thought into the gift but it wouldn't be something I'd buy for myself. please don't take offence!
However, the wine idea has no thought or anything to it. I agree with sidesaddle in that a special handcream or a bath soak would be a lovely idea.

That sounds nice, I think I've seen horsey-related human bath stuff out there somewhere...

Hehe, maybe it would be best!

I don't take offence at all! The bath stuff idea seems good.

If it makes a difference, I'm the oldest person in our lesson group (ages 8-16), and also the 9-year old in our group gave her a horse shoe with her horse's name painted on it and she loved it!

Thank you for all the help guys, keep the tips coming!

I think thats fine from a 9 year old though...its sweet. But if a 16 year old does something similar its just not right IMHO!

I am on the 'slightly creepy' side of the fence - I used to like booze, a good box of chocolate, and clothing when I got gifts from students. I think my favourite gifts were things like warm socks and gloves (my shivvering was apparent clearly!), and I did once get a lovely crop from one of them, which I still have somewhere.

Coming from a tee-totaller - long story but I'm not a recovering alcoholic!! Alcohol wouldn't be greatly appreciated. What about a saddle cover that's personalised, sizing not mush of an issue there if you really want to go that way. You can't go wrong with gloves or socks but they seem a bit too much in this heat!! Anything for Joules but it's a bit pricey for just a present. Gift voucher for your local saddlery, then she can choose something herself.

I feel like a right numpty now! :o Would a little stable plaque thing be nice, or still a bit odd?

She does feel the cold, might get her those for christmas! Might get her a bottle of something nice then..

The saddle cover sounds fab, as her tack is in a tack room thats just a tad dusty!!

Hang on a mo!

I have just re-read your OP. Why are you giving her a present before you go on your hols?

Why not bring a little something back from your trip?

As an instructor chocolates go down VERY well! Especially ones that you wouldn't usually buy. I don't drink (not a recovering alcoholic either!!), but never say anything when I get given a bottle (just give it to my parents).

I'm not sure about the personalised stuff.... Maybe from a small child or a close friend/client....

One of my clients occasionally bakes me cakes!! That's BRILLIANT! :)
