Hi, advice needed please. i have a yearling that I want to start teaching 'ground manners' with the pressure release technique. He is a friendly chap (gelded) who can be groomed, pick all hooves up and easy to catch and put a headcollar on but slightly bolshie.when being led so want to stop it before it becomes a problem. i have seen different types of halters so which is the best and why? Thank you in anticipation...

I’ve used rope halters or duallys with great success with bolshy youngsters. It takes a few go’s for them to understand but once they understand the mechanism it’s really useful. The only problem with the dually is they’re fairly rigid so I had to add sheepskin fluffy stuff to the sides to stop it rubbing - bonus was it stopped it slipping, which they’re known for.

Rope halter here too I bought a Richard Maxwell one about 20 years ago and still use it now but it needs gentle hands and fitted properly for a pick up and use a dually seems good but I have never used one

Thank you, i hadn't thought about a cow halter, i will investigate at our local agricultural store. I had heard dually slipped, so a good tip.
I agree they are only as good as the person at the end, i may be a bit rusty as i thought i wouldn't have any more youngsters, but i did spend a weekend training with Richard Maxwell years ago...

No wonder Hermione was used if that's the horse in your profile, looks lovely. (not at all jealous!;)) Yes so do I rate his methods, and him as a person, appears 'normal' if you get what I mean.
