Not sure whether I should have put this in veterenary (but here goes). My 5 Week old colt is in each night, and turned out for about 10hrs per day. He has straw laid in field but has sores on the hollow of each hock that I have been informed are pressure sores.
Have treated them with various things i.e. wound powder, sudo creme, and purple spray. Vet doesn't seem to think it is a big deal, but it looks so sore, and and don't to leave him scarred. Is there anything breeders specifically use to treat this, as I dont want him cooped up in stable constantly if pos?

Thanks

P.S. Have fallen head over heels in luv with stallion Rubin Cortes. (Any views on him?)

A lot of foals get these but they do seem to grow out of it in time. I usually just smear something like Sudacrem or Dermisol on so it doesn't dry and crack too much. Some people think it's the front hooves catching when they're curled up when laying down that causes it while they're still gangly and awkward.

They aren't pressure sores - they're absolutely normal. In fact foals are born with them. It's just small areas that are devoid of hair when the foal is born - I've heard several theories regarding why - but none of them make much sense to me! They can become irritated in wet weather (as unprotected skin). Just bung a bit of Sudocrem or udder cream on them.

Mine didn't have them so she made some....just be thankful that yours didn't do what mine did and create her own by throwing a temper tantrum and rearing then going over backwards!!!

thanks for info. My previous filly never had them, so I'm a paranoid mum everytime he has a mark on him. lol I'll just carry on as I am with the sudo cream. Vet just said to keep him in (Hmmm)... Not helpful (or practical) Thanks everyone.
