Anyone's vet prescribed Previcox for their horse? I hear it is very good for arthritis and licensed for horses but not dogs. Thinking of a potent alternative to long term use of bute.
Thanks

Yes I know someone using it for their PSSM horse. The price difference between the dog and the horse version is unbelievable. From what she says it's a bitter pill to get them to take but it has revolutionised her horse's life and working better than bute.

You might struggle to find a vet who will prescribe it as Equicox is available and they really should prescribe that (the horse version). That aside my horse is on it and I just drop the tablet in his dinner and he eats it up - I wasn't aware it was bitter although he is pretty good at eating stuff up. It really is very effective and as soon as I tried to take him off it the difference was very dramatic. Mine will have to be on it long term and for me it is far better than bute.

Hi Hetsmum
How much are your paying for the Equicox, I will ask my vet for a course, did you find it more effective than bute?

Hi CazD
My dog is on metacam for arthritis, seems to work for him, stopped limping.

Thanks

Hi Daisy
Mine is actually on the Previcox...........I would have to look up the cost as the dose is very low - like 1/4 of what you would give a dog as horses metabolise differently. I think it was something like £50 for 2+ months worth so was cheaper than bute. The Equicox I know is horrendously expensive - I think my vet quoted 4 or 5 times the cost of bute. I would say the drug has worked better than bute, but it is for ligament damage that I was told would not get better (he has had MRI) however there is always the outside chance the damage has improved so the drug does not need to be so effective - if that makes sense? My horse has possible right dorsal colitis issues last year on danilon hence trying the Previcox. If you can't get Previcox you could try Equicox on prescription online. I would think that would be the cheapest way to get it.

Ok thanks all - My vet wont prescribe Previcox as you say not licensed for horses, the equicox seems a naughty price hiked up the the equine no doubt. Anyhow I will still ask the vet about equicox, maybe the price has come down... lol. At the moment I am giving him a mixture of the turmeric recipe, devils claw and bute, just to try and keep the bute low although I know most of them come with some sort side effect.

Happy days and Xmas!
