My friend has just had all her horses worm counted by her vets, the price is £21.00 plus vat per horse... isnt this very expensive? also the horses had a worm count of 7, 10, 15 and the old horse was 80 apparently if it is 15 or above then they need worming. The vets then proceeded to say to my friend that if you worm just one horse then you have to do them all anyway!

I thought the reason was to just worm the horses which needed doing, can i have your thoughts on this please, thanks!

Ouch. I pay about £7 per sample with Abbey
Abbey say that less than 50 doesn't require worming, although mine have always come back as 0.
As for worming all horses anyway, if they are on the same pasture then I could sort of see the logic. Given we are about the right time to do tapeworm it might be worth doing them all with pramox and then just keeping a closer eye on the oldie in future.

Abbey prices start at £6.50 and go down after 4 horses then again with another amount. It is not possible to get a 0 worm count, the best you can get is <50. Anything under 200 generally does not need worming. Are you sure he didn't test for Tape? I don't know what results come as for them.

That is way over the top - unless it is a blood test for tapeworm. No idea of the results. Can't understand the reason for worming all horses.

I use Abby Diagnostics - £6.50. I have used worm counts now for several years.

If you get low - no need to worm, medium and above worm just that horse. With a high count, I worm and then do another worm count to make sure all is clear.

You still need to worm for tape and encysted worms annually.

I worm count April and September and then use a tape wormer in October or a combi wormer depending on the September worm count results. Then equest end of December then worm count April and repeat.

Works very well - all our yard now uses this method. No need to worm unless needed and for me, saves money which is always an added bonus.

My vet charges £6.59 (just had bill

) tape and encysted only show on blood tests so you still need to worm for them unless you have one done.
