hi, at the weekend i saw an ad for a horse for sale £3500 ono. then ad changed to highest offer taken , phoned up about it and was told 2 people had offered £4k .then i get a call tuesday it is available again anyway tried it today it seemed perfect exactly what we have been looking for . just phoned them up and made an offer of £3k was told they want £4k as they advertised it before xmas for £6500 and got no calls so they reduced it and they have had loads of calls so they think they reduced it to much. am not sure what to do know as it does seem a nice horse, thanks

i had this problem went for one that was advertised for £1000 then when i rang up to make an offer she said she had underpriced it so it was now £1350

i personally think its silly taking the price up! you start high then if no interest drop a bit not go the opposite way

sounds like they've had quite a bit of interest in the horse so they're telling everyone a higher price to try and get people to go higher still if that makes sense?

cant say on what you should do, depends how much you like the horse and what you think its worth to you.

I would simply suggest you keep in touch with them, can you increase your offer at all? Maybe in 2 weeks time they will be more interested in your offer...

we do like the horse that is the problem. although they have had a lot of interest and people have said they will ring them . i am the only one to make an offer

in that case i would point out to them that you LOVE the horse, will give it a fantastic home ( invite them to see where you will keep the horse) and say that you cannot possibly offer more that £3.5k
afterall you did view him advertised at £3.5k and not £4k.

he has been for sale a few months now if he was advertised before christmas so if they are being sensible they should accept your offer.

let us know how it goes!

Stick to your guns on the price otherwise these people have you over a barrel. If they want to sell the horse for cash, now, they will get back to you.

Personally I feels its verging on illegal to advertise at one price and then hike it up once you have folks interested. If they wanted to auction it off they should have made that clear in the ad.

yeah its exactly like house gasumping!

if you really want him and have the extra £500 then i say use it though.

(just my view as i know what it feels like to find THE ONE as such and then worry about it being sold from under you!)

If they had it advertised at £3500 thats what I would be prepared to pay (but hope to pay less !). But if it is just what you are looking for it would be a shame to loose it for the sake of £500. I would offer £3500, but go to 4K if that will stop the bidding and get you the horse.

There is an old phrase in selling 'you can't push a rock uphill'.

The seller chose to reduce the price from £6500, if they wanted £4k they should have asked for it in the first place. But then I'm not trying to buy.

Pay what you feel is a fair price, but what they are trying is at the very least unscrupulous.

On thinking about this, I would arrange to go back and see the horse again, if they're forcing you to up your offer (and frankly IMO being a bit unreasonable) then I would go and make absolutely certain that you think this one is as near perfect for you as you're going to find. If they feel you're wasting their time, TOUGH. If you're still sure, negotiate face to face, don't forget to say that he'll have a lovely home with you and then if it all goes your way, arrange the vetting as quick as you can. Good luck. I think a lot of horses are advertised for silly money at the moment, people price their own according to what they see others advertised for, I'm sure most of them are not worth that much money (or achieve those sums at the end of the day).

I would tell them to stick it!
I think it's a cheek.
If it was worth more money they would have sold it by now. Tell them you are sticking to your offer AND looking at other horses so they might lose you as a buyer anyway.

UPDATE i have just offered £3500 but still wants £4k. i have been looking for over a year had my fingers burnt really bad 2 years ago for a lot of money so have not that big a budget. (that mare now in foal) this is a horse for my daughter she has had nothing to ride for 18months so am really torn as she likes it.

100% agree.

If you think the horse is worth 3k...don't push the price up...If it was worth 3.5 - 4k, then they would have more offers at that range...they dropped to 3k and had loads of interest. Surely that says it all!?

They're just after more money for a horse that doesn't sound like it's worth it.

am not going any higher than what the advert said that i replied to. it was "ono" as well. never mind i have todays h&h to look through later

Oh dear, that's a shame they appear to be greedy grasping so and so's...

Try leaving it 2 weeks and see if they've sold it. I bet they havent... Of course, if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. Good luck hunting for something else.

It sounds like they are taking the pee.
I would leave it with them but let them know that you are looking at a few more over the weekend and the offer of the £3500 only stands until then and that there isnt any more money than the £3500 in the pot to spend.
They obviously know you want the horse and are pushing the price up. Why are people so mean

I'd have to say if they really loved the horse and thought alot of it then they would sell for £3500 and you have to question the type of people that are selling it etc etc or maybe I'm reading into it to much????? thinking more about the money than the horse?

if you can i would offer them £3500 and say thats your final offer etc

if they want him sold they should take it.
just also point out that you did come to view a horse at that price and not the 4k they are now asking.

[/ QUOTE ]

Totally agree with this. I would guess they KNOW you love the horse.

They may have had a lot of calls about the horse - but obviously nobody willing to offer £4000 yet.

Good luck with it anyway.

And you may well get your fingers burnt on this one as well by the sounds of it. They are obviously not serious about selling.

Good luck - but don't hold your breath
