Price Help Please?!

Hello, I'm new to this forum but have read posts in the past that have always been really helpful! Following the sale falling through on the horse I wanted to buy I'm now looking again and think I've found a suitable horse. He is a 15 year old 16.3 id x tb but more tb looking. He is an allrounder safe and sane horse which is what I would like! He is marketed at £4500 and comes with Bridle and rugs saddles by separate negotiation. He will be my second horse but I need an experienced school master type. Is this a fair price or what would be a fair offer? Tia! Any advice gratefully received!
 
I thought so too and with a 5 stage vetting it's about as guaranteed as I'm going to get I think! Quite like the fact he's done it all!
 
If the horse is good natured, heathly and obedient then he is definately worth the money. The tack he comes with is a bonus! Hope it all goes well :)
 
That sounds a little high given the age, but it depends on:
- when you say safe and sane, do you mean literally anyone's ride or is he a bit laid back? Is he good on the ground to clip, vet, shoe etc and hacking first or last, alone or with company?
- You say "allrounder". Are you using that to mean good at everything (i.e. could compete (successfully) at riding club/lower affiliated level) or can walk round in a pattern and pop a few poles but not really talented in any area. This clearly has a big impact on the price.

If he ticks all the good behaviour boxes and has some talent, then the price seems fair - those horses are like gold dust and age wouldn't put off the right person so its pretty much a sellers market. If not, then I think that price is somewhat on the high side as, whilst some horses do continue to compete into their twenties, realistically you have to consider that at his age there is a reasonably good chance he will not be able to maintain his peak levels of activity for more than a few years. If you are looking at something with limited competitive prospects and even relatively minor quirks, at that age I would be looking more in the £1000-2000 bracket.

I wrote the above based on my experience, and then curiosity got the better of me and I researched. The below are what I would consider to be simple and talented (based on description) and of a similar age. They are all c.£1,000 cheaper than you are stating. Unless the horse you are looking at is identifiably better than these, in light of the research I would be inclined to believe it is a good £500-1000 overpriced even if the boxes I set out above are ticked.

you have to ask is it value to you. You have to feel comfortable with the horse and make sure hes the right horse for you.
