Do you 'haggle' wheny buying a horse - even it it is just the one for you? We are having a 'domestic' in that I believe you can't when buying from a trade seller and my OH thinks that cash should be offered at 10 - 20% below the asking price. I keep saying that it isn't like buying a car but the debate ensues!!

Yes, always. Theres no harm in asking, and if you don't ask, you don't get! And yes, always less for cash - esp for trade

Yes! especially from dealers. Last horse went from £7K to £5k. This wasn't even during the credit crunch. Take a deposit and say you will pick it up quick.

Wave fresh cash at a dealer and they'll be tempted to drop their price. Just too darn tempting to turn away cold, hard cash!

Ask before you view the horse are they open to offers - I did it with every horse I viewed (even if I was prepared to pay teh full asking price).

I think everyone is open to an offer, providing it isn't too silly. The worst they can do is say no....so you up your offer if you really want the horse. To be honest I think many sellers allow for some dealing in the initial price they are asking. I believe you should be able to get 10-20% off the asking price, I know I did, although I would have paid the full price because he was what we wanted.
