I am considering buying a youngster who has no passport (2 yrs old and was been home bred. No microchip and the owner says they have never bothered to have them passported. Forgetting the legality of the situation... has anyone done this recently and if so, how much are new passports ?

You'll need vet visit for microchip and filling in paperwork. It's illegal to sell a horse without a passport but I bet plenty change hands without - the legislation is not fit for purpose. Depending on your vets charges you should be able to get it done for under £100 - as previous poster said BHS do passports, Horse Passport Agency do them as well, they're about £30 I think.

If he's any particular breed best to contact the relevant breed society and passport him through them.
