Vet prescribed 20 antihistamines a day for 2 weeks to hopefully (please God!) help horse with a cough and high resp rate.

£43.32 for the fortnight. Holy cow!

Has anyone else sourced them cheaper then this or am I on Tesco cheap beans for next couple of years (I'm a student)?

Thats not too bad. When I got my first horse it had ringworm. One 2 minute vet visit and a tub of something anti fungal cost over £200! xx

Blimey Spotty Falula! Think I'm just feeling pants because we keep trying different meds but with no positive result.

I will stop being a tight arse! There's alot you can do with baked beans. :)

I actually use loratadine antihistamine for my cob mare. She comes out in huge swellings from gnat bites, and they went down very quickly giving her 10 a day for a week. £4.50 for a pack of 30...

Theres a website either chemist4you or pharmacy4you (search on here) and they used to sell large pots of 500 for about a fover

Hmmm- thankyou for the input everyone- very much appreciated!

Wench- I'll def be looking those sites up. A fiver (unless fover is somekind of rhyming slang I've not come across ;) ;)) thats more like it!!

At this rate there will be beans AND bread....

My OH is a master with baked bean recipes.Let me know if you get stuck for ideas :p

You arent tight, its a lot of money if you dont have it! xx

Sydney have a look on the pack what the actual drug is and the dose, then have a look on the shelf at a chemist or tescos or other dispensing chemist for the drug, suss out the dose the vet has prescribed and see if you can get to that dose.
30 human one a day antihistamines loratadine or ceftazamine (think it is) are about 3.50 in sainsbury's -sorry not describing this very well but do you get my drift, only thing is don't tell them they are for your hoss or they won't let you have them, or get vet to write a prescription and look for them cheaper on line.

mjcssjw2- no thats described very well- it gives me a plan. I'll pick up meds tomorrow- find out exactly what they are and then see if I can get them cheaper elsewhere.

Good thinking!

A girl on my old yard used human antihistamines like piriton to good effect. Don't know whether it's safe though - but it did work when her horse came out in huge lumps due to fly bites

I did this once with my TB mare, and it did work I have to say, I got the shops own brand too.

Tesco's none drowsy antihistamines do the trick for my boy. £1 for 14, 8 a day for a few days. He's had a few flare ups of hives this year and they've sorted him right out :-)

Recently gave the tb i share a human one, after she got a bite on her hock and went lame in seconds and we could see it swelling before out eyes. It may not of been the official horse one but it solved the problem. Think she had 6 ish tablets may of been less as she tried very hard to spit them back out.

I use normal anti histamines for my mare who can occassionally have urticaria type flare ups for unknown reasons!

My equine vet is very good and told me not to bother with the equine ones and just go buy some normal ones from the shop - the ones I use are called cetirizine (or something like that) and I put 7 tabs in half an apple twice a day - the lumps and bumps are usually gone within a day and a half x

Safe as houses, one tablet per 100kg of body weight. A woman up at my yard used them this week when her mare came up in an allergic bumpy rash all over, she reckons due to using avon skin so soft, but all the bites had heads on so I suspect it was flies... poor mare she was pickled head to toe :(

Baked beans are great, especially when animals are breaking you. just forked out for all the school stuff, books, uniforms etc... and the vets bill for the dog is going to be wayyyyy more!!!!!

My sons tb suffers terrible from allergy to fly bites, so from about November on I go to 6different stores and buy as many own brand they will allow to stock up for summer ! Naughty I know but I got stung first time it happened to horse when vet sold me them£50 for weeks supply.
I do this every few weeks, sometimes roap mother and step dad in to do covert buying for me.
Own brand are just as good but can be a cheap as £2 a box of 14

Vet prescribed our boy 15 at a time, but he told me it would be cheaper to get them myself from chemist. I ended up buying piriton syrup & poring it in his feed, was much cheaper & did the job xx

OP, I used 10 cetirizine hydrochloride for my horse each day to good effect. You can get 30 on line for £1.20 which works out around £5 for a course of two weeks. You can up the dose to twenty if they don't work. Cured my mare's cough which was caused by a pollen allergy.
