My friend just been to pick up a bag of Baileys no 4 for her mare and it has gone up again from £8.50 to £9.25 - i cant beleive that its nearly a tenner a bag of feed !!!
£9.25 is the RRP price so that's probably what most feed suppiers would be charging. However, just so you, the suppliers do usually charge at least £1 per bag more than the price they get it in for. You're not paying over the odds for your bag.
As a feed merchant, I can assure you that all feed has gone up, some has increased more than once this season already.
D&H feeds have increased by approximately 30p per bag, but some of the Spillers have increased by over £1 per bag. As yet, Dengie have not increased their prices.
If I needed to feed my (fat cob type!) horses this winter, I would be looking at a chaff based feed with sugarbeet if necessary. Bog standard molassed sugar beet pellets are £5.50. Straight feeds (wheat, barley and oats) that we buy direct from a local farmer have increased buy £1.50 per bag in the last six weeks.
If you are considering buying feed and storing it, check the sell by dates and store it somewhere cool, dry and rodent proof. Chaff based feeds are often is sealed plastic sacks and can be allowed to be rained on!
i work in a feed merchants and prices have shot up over the last 2 months...set to go up again i'm afraid.....and contary to popular belief we are not being greedy, if we don't put our prices up we will not make any money and go bankrupt!!!
