I am sure the price of garlic has gone up.. But... wild garlic is in season, does anyone feed the wild stuff? If so how? And ideas for drying it so use throughout the summer? :-) Anything to save some pennies!

Save the pennies by not feeding it - it is antibacterial and damages the gut flora, if you have to feed it add a probiotic. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole TBH

The inevitable "Don't feed garlic" responses not withstanding.....

Anything with "horse" in front of it doubles in price. If you go to your local bulk buy store you can get dried garlic for human consumption at a fraction of the price.

In theory any herb keeps if dried correctly - but there is a lot of water content in garlic so personally I would worry about not being able to get it dry enough. You can feed fresh of course!

And I think JillA is referring to garlic in general. There are schools of thought about this - you can google it is you want but HHO's are known to get a bit heated on the topic!!

I agree, horse owners have a bottomless pocket! I was thinking the flower heads which I would of thought would dry quite well? I dont feed it all year, its only because of the flies I might introduce - I figured making him a little more stinky may help to repel them :-)

You will always find research papers to support both sides of the argument, it just comes down to individuals being sensible with what they feed.

Id be interested to see if he would selectively graze it!

I don't know about the top growth, leaves or flower heads, the stuff that is normally sold is dried cloves (bulbs). I drove past MASSES of the stuff on the way to Ruthin on Wednesday, along with dandelions by the trillions, should be easy enough to pick some and offer it.
I offered mine some of the dried stuff in a bucket a few years ago wondering if they would self medicate. After a few weeks of it being in their field shelter it was untouched.

There is a lot near me, I often see people picking it. I just feel I need to utilize its abundance, and with the flies being bad it seems a logical solution. I will see if he likes it, hes a peculiar thing but you never know. I have also thought about using it topically on rugs - literally pestle and mortaring it and rubbing it in!
