Hello,

Our local farm contractor is about to make our haylage for us this year (weather permitting, some time in the next week or 2 I hope!) and bale it and wrap it into small Heston size bales (approx 10 small bales to one Heston).

I have not had hage before, so.....how much is the retail price of a small Heston? (wrapped, not inc delivery).

The deal is that he will make the whole 10 acres, leave me approx 30 Hestons and take the rest away for him to sell retail. I think that the retail price this winter will be about £30 (???), of which £15 odd will be real cost of making it. Does this sound about right?? Cost of plastic and fuel is way up so may be a bit more???

So anything over 30 bales that he takes away, should be "profit" and we have agreed that we will have a ready reckoner once we know how many he has made etc etc.

Am I about right on these prices or way off beam?

Our neighbour was paying £30 per bale delivered (direct from the farm on a forklift) last winter.

Any advice/input would be gratefully received....

thanks!

Lat winter I was paying £30, or £17 for a half sized one, don't know how much they are currently as I've just bought small sized £4 each off the field, and hay £2.50 straight off the field.

on deals like this the contractor/farmer usually takes about half of the crop

the last time i paid for large bale haylage i think i paid the cobtractors £11 a bale

My 4ft haylege bales are going to cost me £10 each this year to be made (8.50 last year). I know that last year the retail cost was £28 a bale round here.

Haylage of this size was costing us £15/bale last year, although it does depend on where you live. Also, it isn't as much of a deal as it sounds, lol, as we made the haylage ourselves, and the £15/bale was approximate cost of diesel, wrap, etc etc.

Retail it sells for between £25 - £35 a bale, depending on the quality.
