Price of hay / straw etc in the South East?

What are you currently paying for :
- a small bale of hay (meadow hay)
- a big round bale of hay?
- small bale of straw?

There seems to be a big variation in price - anywhere from £3.50 for a small bale of hay to £5.50.

Big bale of hay - I've been quoted £35! seems expensive!

Straw - small bale - £4.50 each

I've just gone onto DIY a few days ago, and am seeing that the prices vary quite a lot...I would like a good price, but also want good quality (no dust, and I would like this year's supply). How do you normally source your hay? newspaper ads / online / personal recommendations?
 
Hi, we're collecting ours off the field for £2.50 a bale, they wanted £15 for the large ones.
It's cheap because its a bit stalky, the farmer hasn't had a good year again.

If you google hay for sale hampshire the cheapest ive seen it else where is £4.50 advertised on Pre-loved.

If i was to but through our local feed merchant it would be £5 for last years rubbish my horses wont touch or £7 for this years. A total rip off. Try and get it off the field or you can contact your local council, they sell it from their fields and we've paid only £2 a bale from them before but beware they may have the odd can or rubbish mixed in with the bale, that's why we went else where.

Yes, I've been checking the local newspapers etc for cheaper suppliers, and have looked online. If you collect it off the field, how long do you normally wait before you use it? I've heard you have to wait 6 weeks...
 
Hi. We have just paid £2.50 for medium quality hay for our pony and we have pre purchased large round bale haylage from the local farm for £25 a bale for the competition horse, but what that is like i dont know until we use it later this year. I have heard of some really expensive prices being quoted but i think if you can buy it from the field or farm its a lot cheaper than the hay merchants. Good luck :)
 
We get the hay off the field the day its cut as the farmer doesn't like it left over night, incase its stolen. We then store it in our barn with a pallet underneath and a gap all around so it airs, and I dont use it until about November/ december as we have good grass.
We learnt our lesson about storing it last year as any bales that were up againt the wall of the barn or under a plastic sheet went mouldy as it's still slightly damp from cutting.
