Prices coming down?

I am not looking but i like to keep an eye on the sales just for nosiness. Ive noticed a lot of what would have been 6-8k horses in the (more realistic) 3-4 range lately, the 3/4yo unbrokens are no longer 4k off the bat but back down to 1200 range and the correctly priced 10k+ types not selling. Have the covid prices started waning?

Well, as someone who is currently actively looking for a new set of legs, I certainly hope so. I have recently been offered a newly broken, very scruffy little cob for a staggering £7k. Nice little horse, but needed a lot of work. Think I'll keep hold of my money for now and keep looking ....

Its maybe an Ireland thing. The prices on the mainland were always vastly more ridiculous than here anyway..hence why i didn't buy from a local person who exclusively sells to "old english ladys"

I’ve been talking about this today with a friend looking to sell. The prices have come down dramatically from what I can see but so has the quality.

Lol ... I qualify as "an old English lady" for sure. At 67 I'm looking for something sensible and ridable and am prepared to pay a fair price for the right one. But somewhere there is a line between "fair" and "rip-off" .....

I have been looking out of nosiness (definitely not buying until my oldies go… but it’s winter and they are a decent age so who knows when they might visit horsey heaven ? so just keeping an eye on the sales) and I thought there was actually quite a few that would be in my very small budget that seemed nice. Usually my budget would throw up quite a few issues with the horse but doesn’t seem quite so bad now. Or else they just aren’t stating their problems.

Hope not! I really need to sell my Shetland now she's back off loan, but 1. she is just tooooooo cute and 2. I cba with the whole selling thing as we all know what it's like. Don't want prices falling while I'm dithering...although I might be at the dither stage for some time!

The Monart Sale has some stunning young horses on the catalogue, it will be interesting to see the returns as they will be a reflection of the current market for quality competition bred youngstock.

The super safe all rounder that us 'older' ladies look for will always fetch top money regardless of what we might want to pay.

I bought mine at the end of August, from Ireland, and paid less than I thought I would have to. Apart from being grey and only 4, he is exactly the type that us older ladies are looking for.

I know some prices have been ridiculously over the top lately, but I truly think that horse prices pre Covid were (and have been for years) stupidly low, and totally unreflective of how much it costs to actually breed, grow, back and produce the sort of horse that most of us want.

My horse is exactly what most older ladies want and if I were to sell her (which I am tentatively considering) I would want a realistically high price for her, because she is worth it.

What price for safety? If a horse has a good temprement, has been strated correctly, exposed to everything and is well schooled and capable of being hacked out by itself in heavy and vast traffic then it is worth sensible money. However there are a lot of 'Chancers' out there asking stupid money for totally unsafe horses.

I was looking in H&H this morning and was surprised at some seemingly reasonable prices for what looked like 'nice' horses!

I think the types that might have been £10,000 at the beginning of the year, might be back IRO £7,000.

I thought prices had been coming down a bit too and am dithering as to whether they're going to shoot back up and I should purchase while I can afford to or whether to hang on a bit longer.

I’ve been helping a couple of friends look and I feel there is more coming onto the market and prices are coming down slightly. Having said that there is a lot of rubbish out there. We found a nice horse for a friend by word of mouth which she picked up today and she still paid a good price for a super safe nice all rounder.

Winter, the new budget, people going back to work, pre-christmas, largely over Covid hysteria and all travel back to being 'fairly' straight-forward.. would make sense if they were coming down.

I've just sold one of those. A delight to have around, mainly produced for hunting but works in an outline, jumps a course of show jumps and good looking as well. He was still five figures.

Should have popped the Shetlands in the recent sales. The prices at those have been INSANE!!! Like way way stupid!

Top price for Shetland was 4k at the fell pony and registered mountain and moorland sale today at junction 36 auction. Prices generally were good, Shetlands/minis doing a roaring trade.

I saw a nice 14.2hh bay mare earlier today, can’t remember the age but it was neither young nor old, nf x tb type, was a 100% solid hack in company or alone but had never seen a school, £3k. I think that type is priceless!

Fell pony prices were very good, many foals into 4 figures, adults fetching good prices up to just over 6k.
Mind you, the natives are actually now achieving decent prices in the last few years. There are no longer the 1.5k ridden registered ponies, not those of any decent quality anyway.

If this is the case my fella will be relieved that the current “free horse” that has cost us an effing fortune won’t cost 10k to replace like for like.
