I have two horses on grass only livery.
Their owners don’t check on them often maybe once a week, twice at most.
It’s gotten to the point where I will check on them morning and night and feed them what they are meant to have of a night.
I have never had grass only livery on my yard before and I’m shocked at the absolute absence of the owners.
They pay £20 per week per horse but I’ve ended up in a situation where I’m looking after them 80% of the time!
I’m wondering what yard owners charge to make up and feed their grass only liveries?
To check on them twice daily?
And to do rug changes etc?

I suspect it depends on what area of the country you are in.
I pay £190 a month for grass livery for my youngster (I suspect that is quite expensive for around here). He is checked twice a day and that includes ad lib hay in winter and making up and giving feed in winter. It also includes rug changes (though mine hasn't had a rug on yet) and the poo picking is done by the yard.

It sounds like your tenants are treating it like full grass livery but you were/are expecting it to be DIY grass livery.

Thanks guys. I made it clear that at that price the horses are DIY grass livery but they just aren’t bothered at all. If I didn’t feed them Or check them, they wouldn’t get fed or checked. And then they complain that the horses are bulshy when they turn up plonk a feed in the field and leave once a week. X

I pay just under £20 a week (and I think it’s a good deal) but that’s completely DIY.

Obviously there are other people around and if there was a problem/emergency someone would help/ call you, but your expected to be there at least once a day, or twice if fed am and pm.

Owners have to do all poo picking/filling of troughs/ragwort pulling/putting hay out in the winter.

I pay £100 summer where all the owners have a rota to check them, winter its £120 inc hay and as they are moved closer to the yard the rota isnt needed.
If it was £200 a month there i would pay it still tbh.

If you have told them that you are only providing DIY grass livery then I would let them know that they need to visit the horses daily and if they didn't then you will charge £5 per day per horse to check it. On top of their £20 per week.

thank you, I’ve spoke to them numerous times and they’ll keep it up for a few days and then drop off again to nothing. I will have to be more firm and make sure they understand the extra charges x

I charge £45.00 a week full grass livery I do everything and includes hay and use of stable which I muck out if weather is extreme. Also sort out restricted grazing paddock in summer .
