Going to have to sell one of my hunters in the near future (next summer!) due to going to uni and need something smaller that my mum can ride. I was wondering simply out of curiosity what I should price the horse at. He is a 16.3 Selle Francais chestnut, very good breeding (Mill Reef, Sea Bird bloodlines), ex racehorse 7 y.o. He has previously hunted with Middleton and Belvoir, and last two seasons with the Cottesmore over all country. He jumps anything out hunting (hedges, ditches, timber, tiger traps, the works) and requires very little (if any) riding into fences. Not a novice ride as can be forward going and is very keen, but sensible both out hunting and at home, fine with traffic, farrier, dentist, dogs etc. I think he has previously whipped in/ hunted hounds with the Middleton. Knows his job, cracking jump, loves the big country and would ideally suit a thruster that wants to stay out all day. Alongside this, he won his first ever dressage test and has done Pony Club Novice Area Dressage. Jumps coloured poles/ fillers/ etc, and has done showing (eligible for ROR). He is also very affectionate and loves being cuddled. I brought him for £3000 two years ago... how much would you recommend i price him at (bearing in mind he would have another seasons hunting under his belt and some more dressage competitions, where he is currently competing at Prelim but is ready for Novice) fopr when i come to sell him at next year? Many thanks for reading XXX

I think its a tricky one as it depends what you sell him as.

If you sell as an all rounder, presuming he's tough and sound, you could look up to 5.5k as he has no real proof of ability (he will be eight by this time) for how old he is.

As an out and out hunter, it really does depend. A rolls royce for top pack high days I've seen advertised for as much as 12k. I know of an out and out hunting pony sold for 6k because it was safe and people will pay for that knowledge for their child. I think you'd get more if you sold him as a hunter and then told potential purchasers he dies x y z too than as an all rounder. Unfortunately people seem to have a block towards them and seem to think that because its an all rounded its mediocre at everything. We have a pony that was described by Claire B as the ultimate allrounder. He's hunted Cotts Tues, Thurs and Sat, Beaufort, S Notts, and drag hunted. He won everytime out by a convincing margin BSJA, he's been placed BE, and won unaff dressage with good percentages. He's a snaffle mouth, done pc teams. He's excelled at everything he's done, however as an allrounder nobody was interested because the price tag didn't fit the ideal for an all rounder. Advertised at the same price as a showjumper, we had 100x more interest.

Thankyou!! So word ad carefully towards hunting rather than as an all rounder- which is good as hunting is definitely more his forte! Is the grey you have been hunting for sale? He looks v. nice xx

I think that's your best bet. Really play to his strengths and say he's done Tuesdays with the Cottesmore, done hunt service, and also hunted with the Belvoir. They're strong enough packs that that speaks volumes in itself. Make sure he hunts everywhere - front, back, middle, gate shutting. The more you can say he does with his hunting, the more people will be interested - if you say he'll go front and last, you'll get the thrusters AND the pootlers, rather than one or t'other!

Yes, unfortunately so! He's utterly divine - if I could afford him myself to hunt instead of risking the eventers I would snap him up! I shan't say too much more - button pushers and all that...!

if he is a superb hunter then put the word around and sell him from the hunting field .. either from now onwards or at the start of cubbing next year. summer is not the time to sell a hunter ... albeit one that can do more than one job.. good luck.
