I think your title may be a little confusing.
Off the top of my head - a PRO biotic contains the actual beneficial bacteria with which you hope to repopulate the hind gut of the horse, a PRE biotic is supposed to contain ingredients that make sure the gut is an environment where those bacteria can survive - in terms of pH etc.
For best effect, feed both.

I prefer PRE biotics as opposed to PRO biotics...
Prebiotics (Particularly MOS Prebiotics) will bind to acid causing bacteria (lactic acid producers in the hind gut) which are the main culprits in colic etc. Once the Prebiotics have bound to the bacteria they are then able to disperse these harmful bacteria by taking them out in the droppings.
However, probiotics are Lactic Acid Producing Bacteria (LABS), so called 'beneficial' bacteria that are added to the diet. (much the same as us drinking yakhult) These are ok in the fore-gut for keeping out pathogens, and there is some evidence then they help digest starch which is possibly beneficial for horses fed high starch diets. However, there is then the potential for them to get into the hind gut and cause havoc when they then become 'bad' bacteria
For example, with colic, when the horse eats too much soluble carbohydrates (starch and sugar) they go thorough the stomach and fore gut too quickly and pass into the hindgut where they get rapidly fermented by LABS and the resulting acid causes the true beneficial bacteria (the fibre digestors) to die and release endotoxins and this is what leads to spasmodic colic.
Another thing to consider - Yea-sacc actively stimulates the fibre digestors, leading to improved fibre digestion and actually neutralises the acid in the hind gut which then lessens the chance of colic.

OP,
I think you should be aware that H's Mum is marketing her product called Coligone on this thread, so try to do your research fully before deciding upon a product to purchase.
I use Protexin probiotics for my mare, and it does seem to prevent her having spasmodic colic, so I could recommend it.
The difference is, I don't benefit financially from doing so, which H's mum will if she manages to get you to buy Coligone.

Kate, I'm sure the OP appreciated your information regarding pro- and pre-biotics, and would not suggest that you shouldn't post, at all.
I do believe though, that posters should make it explicit where they have a direct interest in selling the products in question, or similar products, so the reader can evaluate the posts accordingly.
